Virtue is what impels souls toward purity.

And I have found attaining knowledge noblest.

And perfection in all integrity and character

has always depended on the nobility of the sciences.

No bird has risen on a wing of ignorance

toward perfection; yet how often it has fluttered through knowledge!

I urge souls onward with my insight’s sung melody

toward perfection, when fidelity’s guide sings.

Free in conscience, he is not fettered by desire

in an illness without attaining a cure.

Through my wisdom’s echoing proclamation, I hope

to turn souls toward purity, away from wrongdoing.

    وقفت لترقية الفضيلةِ موقفا

    My reason has ended my dealings with events;

I have taken a stand to advance virtue.

And even if they reached toward perfection at my call,

apart from the sciences, that would be mere affectation.

Do minds perceive that their plantings

will not be harvested except through wholesome knowledge?

And when souls compete, you find one endowed

with refinement, standing high upon the upland of glory.

So let your souls live by the spirit of their perfection,

as a band active in the fellowship of greatness.

    حرية الأفكار ربعٌ ما عفى

    And let your thoughts awaken to their flourishing;

freedom of thought is a dwelling never effaced.

    Indeed, the imitator is powerless in the face of events;

not every opinion concerning events is to be followed.

So adopt the aspirations of the noble, and jostle

the shoulders of the free in virtue and fidelity.

And reform the ways of souls through that by which

they grow pure, and do not leave perfection deferred,

until glory rises among you, saying:

    People—all people—are brethren of purity.
