إن المعارف للقلوب مصائدُ

إن المعارف للقلوب مصائدُ

وسنا العقول بغير وهب خامد

وسنا العقول بغير وهب خامد

Truly, forms of knowledge are snares for hearts,

Indeed, forms of knowledge are snares for hearts;

and the radiance of intellects, without a gift, is dim.

and the radiance of minds, without a gift, lies quenched.

والجَد قبل الكسب في إدراكها

والجَد قبل الكسب في إدراكها

والكسب في التحقيق وهب وارد

والكسب في التحقيق وهب وارد

Good fortune precedes acquisition in attaining them,

Good fortune precedes effort in attaining it;

and acquisition, in true realization, is an arriving gift.

and effort, in truth, is itself a gift received.

وإذا تحجبت الحقائق عن حجى

وإذا تحجبت الحقائق عن حجى

فكثائف الأهواء فيهِ رواكد

فكثائف الأهواء فيهِ رواكد

When truths are veiled from an intellect,

And when truths are veiled from an intellect,

dense passions lie stagnant within it.

the dense masses of desires lie stagnant within it.

وقداسةُ التجريد مجلبة الصفا

وقداسةُ التجريد مجلبة الصفا

وصفا النفوس هو البصير الناقِد

وصفا النفوس هو البصير الناقِد

The purity of detachment brings serenity,

The sanctity of detachment brings purity;

and purity of souls is the clear-sighted, discerning judge.

وإذا تقدست القلوب من الهوى

وإذا تقدست القلوب من الهوى

فلهن أسرار الغيوب مشاهد

فلهن أسرار الغيوب مشاهد

When hearts are purified of passion,

And when hearts are sanctified from desire,

the secrets of unseen realms become visible to them.

وسنا البصائر مدرك إن مَدّه

وسنا البصائر مدرك إن مَدّه

من بحر نور الله نور واقد

من بحر نور الله نور واقد

The radiance of inner sight can be apprehended if it is sustained

by a blazing light from the sea of God's light.

ومتى تواردت الأشعّة وانجلت

فاقصد فعندك في طريقك قائِدُ

Whenever the rays stream in succession and shine clear,

And whenever the rays stream in and become clear,

then aim straight: within you, on your path, is a guide.

proceed purposefully: you have a guide along your path.

وعلى كمالك فاعترف بالنقص لا

وعلى كمالك فاعترف بالنقص لا

يغررك وهمك والخيال الفاسد

يغررك وهمك والخيال الفاسد

Even at your perfection, acknowledge imperfection; do not

Despite your perfection, acknowledge deficiency; do not

let your delusion and corrupt imagination deceive you.

فعلى المراصد من صفاتك قاطع

فعلى المراصد من صفاتك قاطع

وهواك من دون الموارد ذائد

وهواك من دون الموارد ذائد

At every watch-post, some trait of yours is a highwayman,

For among your traits is a waylayer at the lookout posts;

and your passion bars you from the watering places;

and your desire bars you from the watering places.

وعلى المدارج في المعارج دافعٌ

وعلى المدارج في المعارج دافعٌ

إن لم يكن لك في الرقيّ مساعِدُ

إن لم يكن لك في الرقيّ مساعِدُ

upon the stages amid the ascents, it repels you

On the steps of ascent is one who pushes you back,

unless you have a helper in your rising.

هلا أتتك عن السعادة خبرة

هلا أتتك عن السعادة خبرة

وأتاك من فيض المعارف شاهد

وأتاك من فيض المعارف شاهد

Have you not received knowledge of felicity,

Has not news of felicity reached you,

and a witness from the outpouring of knowledge,

and a witness come to you from knowledge's outpouring,

بكمال طبع صحائف نبويّةٍ

بكمال طبع صحائف نبويّةٍ

شرعية لهدى النفوس موارد

شرعية لهدى النفوس موارد

through the perfect printing of prophetic pages—

through the completed printing of prophetic pages,

wellsprings of sacred law for guiding souls?

pages of sacred law, wellsprings of guidance for souls?

تحلي حواشيها خرائد خلب

تحلي حواشيها خرائد خلب

لله من خلف الحجاب خرائد

لله من خلف الحجاب خرائد

Captivating maidens adorn their margins—

Beguiling maidens adorn their margins—

by God, what maidens lie behind the veil!

توحي إلى الروع الهدى من نورها

توحي إلى الروع الهدى من نورها

وهدى النبي هو الضياء الواقد

وهدى النبي هو الضياء الواقد

From their light they inspire guidance in the heart,

From their light they impart guidance to the heart;

and the Prophet's guidance is the blazing radiance.

فيها لمقتبس العلوم مصابح

فيها لمقتبس العلوم مصابح

ومعالم ومواقف ومقاصد

ومعالم ومواقف ومقاصد

Within them are lamps for one seeking knowledge,

Within them are lamps for those who draw upon learning,

landmarks, stations, and aims;

and landmarks, stations, and goals,

ومعارف ولطائف فيضية

ومعارف ولطائف فيضية

ومظاهر قدسيّة ومشاهد

ومظاهر قدسيّة ومشاهد

forms of knowledge and outpouring subtleties;

and insights and subtleties flowing from divine bounty,

holy manifestations and unveiled visions.

and sacred manifestations and visions.

تحيا القلوب بها وتهوى رشدها

تحيا القلوب بها وتهوى رشدها

ولكل ما تهوى القلوب شواهد

ولكل ما تهوى القلوب شواهد

Through them hearts live and yearn for right guidance,

Hearts live through them and desire their right guidance;

and everything hearts desire has its proofs.

and all that hearts desire has its witnesses.

زهراء تنثرُ جوهراً كلماتها

زهراء تنثرُ جوهراً كلماتها

ومن العلوم نفائس وفرائد

ومن العلوم نفائس وفرائد

Radiant, its words scatter jewels

Radiant pages: their words scatter jewels,

and precious, peerless treasures of knowledge.

and treasures and peerless gems of learning.

حار ابن إبراهيم في ترتيبهِ

حار ابن إبراهيم في ترتيبهِ

شرفاً له زهر النجوم سواجد

شرفاً له زهر النجوم سواجد

Ibn Ibrahim stood amazed at its arrangement;

Ibn Ibrahim was bewildered by its arrangement;

in honor of it, the radiant stars bow in prostration.

in his honor, the bright stars bow down.

متن تودّ الشمس لو عقدت لهُ

متن تودّ الشمس لو عقدت لهُ

تاجاً وأن له النجوم قلائد

تاجاً وأن له النجوم قلائد

A text for which the sun would wish to fashion

A text for which the sun wishes it could fashion

a crown, with the stars as necklaces.

a crown, and that the stars were necklaces for it.

حَسَن تضيء به محاسنُ يوسفٍ

حَسَن تضيء به محاسنُ يوسفٍ

ولحسن يوسف كل حسن ساجد

ولحسن يوسف كل حسن ساجد

Beautiful: through it the beauties of Joseph shine,

Lovely: through it the charms of Yusuf shine;

and before Joseph's beauty every beauty bows.

and every beauty bows before Yusuf's beauty.

طوبى لفرقتنا المحقة إنه

طوبى لفرقتنا المحقة إنه

نعم الامام امامنا والقائد

نعم الامام امامنا والقائد

Blessed is our truth-upholding community; indeed, he is

Blessed is our community that upholds the truth! Indeed, he is

an excellent imam—our imam and leader.

a most excellent imam—our imam—and leader.

قطع الخصوم هدى وفض ثغورهم

قطع الخصوم هدى وفض ثغورهم

وكذا المحق عن الحقائق زائد

وكذا المحق عن الحقائق زائد

It routed its opponents with guidance and breached their defenses;

He defeated opponents through guidance and breached their defenses;

likewise, the upholder of truth goes beyond the truths.

and thus the champion of truth defends the truths [apparent reading].

والحق يعلو والموفق غالب

والحق يعلو والموفق غالب

والبطل يرهق والملفق فاسد

والبطل يرهق والملفق فاسد

Truth rises, and the divinely aided is victorious;

Truth rises supreme, and the one granted success prevails;

the champion overwhelms, while the fabricator is false.

while falsehood is overwhelmed and the fabricator is corrupt.

أو ما ترى فصل الخطاب بحكمة

أو ما ترى فصل الخطاب بحكمة

للحق فيه مصادرٌ ومَوارد

للحق فيه مصادرٌ ومَوارد

Or do you not see decisive discourse delivered with wisdom,

Do you not see decisive discourse endowed with wisdom,

where truth has both sources and watering places?

أو ما ترى ربعاً منيراً دوحه

أو ما ترى ربعاً منيراً دوحه

فيه لفرسان العلوم مَطارد

فيه لفرسان العلوم مَطارد

Or do you not see a luminous precinct, whose great tree

Do you not see a dwelling whose spreading trees are radiant,

holds arenas for the knights of knowledge?

where the horsemen of learning have grounds for pursuit?

نبت الفلاح على زبى صفحاتهِ

نبت الفلاح على زبى صفحاتهِ

يسقيه والقران ماء واحد

يسقيه والقران ماء واحد

Success sprouts upon the heights of its pages;

Success has sprouted on the knolls of its pages;

one water waters both it and the Qur'an.

the same water nourishes it and the Quran.

رتعت أوابد كل عَارفة بسا

رتعت أوابد كل عَارفة بسا

حته فهن لمن أراد مَصائد

حته فهن لمن أراد مَصائد

The elusive rarities of every field of knowledge graze in its court—

The wild creatures of every insight have grazed in its

—yard; for whoever seeks them, they are snares.

أمحمد مهدت شرع محمدٍ

أمحمد مهدت شرع محمدٍ

نعم المهاد لنا ونعم الماهد

نعم المهاد لنا ونعم الماهد

O Muhammad, you prepared the law of Muhammad—

O Muhammad, you have laid the ground for Muhammad's law;

an excellent resting place for us, and excellent its preparer.

how fine the bed prepared for us, and how fine its preparer!

وبسطت حاشية ملأت وصابها

وبسطت حاشية ملأت وصابها

دراً وذاك الدر كنز خالد

دراً وذاك الدر كنز خالد

You spread a marginal commentary and filled its copious flow

And you unfolded a marginal gloss, filling its [vessels?]

with pearls—and those pearls are an enduring treasure.

with pearls; those pearls are an everlasting treasure.

ولقد توفرت السعادة وانجلى ال

ولقد توفرت السعادة وانجلى ال

اقبال وانكمش العدو الحاسد

اقبال وانكمش العدو الحاسد

Felicity has indeed become complete, and pros—

Felicity has indeed abounded, and there has shone forth

—perity has shone forth, while the envious foe shrank away.

good fortune, while the envious enemy has shrunk away.

وتألقت غرر البشائر حينما انت

وتألقت غرر البشائر حينما انت

ظمت لجوهرها الثمين قلائد

ظمت لجوهرها الثمين قلائد

The radiant brows of glad tidings glittered when

necklaces were strung for its precious jewel.

بكمالها طبعاً وكون كمالها

بكمالها طبعاً وكون كمالها

فيه لغايات الكمال معاقد

Its perfection lies in its printing, while its full perfection

through its completed printing, and because its perfection

contains points of attachment for perfection's highest reaches.

holds within it bonds to perfection's highest aims.

وأتاك تأريخي ادرس الترتيب أو

وأتاك تأريخي ادرس الترتيب أو

قمراً بدا للشرع فيه مقاصد

قمراً بدا للشرع فيه مقاصد

And here comes my chronogram: “Study the Arrangement,” or

My chronogram has come to you: 'Study the arrangement,' or

“A moon appeared, wherein the sacred law has aims”;

أو شئت برٌّ ظاهرٌ تاريخه

أو شئت برٌّ ظاهرٌ تاريخه

أو قول حاشية الحديث فرائدّ

أو قول حاشية الحديث فرائدّ

or, if you wish, “Manifest righteousness” is its chronogram;

or, if you wish, 'Manifest goodness' is its chronogram;

or say: “The marginalia of Hadith are peerless gems.”

or the saying: 'The hadith commentary is peerless gems.'
