Affliction comes for purification and remembrance,
Affliction comes as purification and reminder
As though every descending affliction were a blessing.
As if every affliction is a blessing in disguise

And this abode is a dwelling filled with harm,
And this world is filled with harm
Yet, with patience, it is sealed with forgiveness.
But with patience and forgiveness it concludes

So accept the decrees in hardship and well-being,
The ordainer of destinies in hardship and wellbeing
For no foot stands firm except through contentment.
For nothing endures except by acceptance, stand firm

I ask God's forgiveness; I do not complain of affliction, nor
I seek God's forgiveness, I do not complain of affliction or
do I see it as anything but loving care brought by generosity.
See it as anything but a bestowal of generosity

The soul's nature is panic at whatever grieves it,
The nature of the soul is to panic when afflicted
And in joy it plunges headlong into transgression.
And in joy, to be excessive and reckless

So judge the soul in both states: has it submitted
So judge the soul in both states, did it submit
to God? For reason is the arbiter of its states.
To God? For reason rules its states

So cast your insight wherever the soul plunges headlong.
So toss insight where the soul trespass

We wear away, while the soul still hopes for long life,
I decay, yet hope stays alive in my soul
And that is more exhausting than what pain can do.
And that is more agonizing than pain

With misery it rages, with comfort it blazes

Afflictions of faith are the most wounding blows we suffer,
The calamities of religion are most bitter

So strive for reward in all matters, and never

Weary of affliction, for weariness is the crux of the ill

Rather, its two witnesses are the sword and the pen.
But witnessed by sword and pen
