Our beloved, separation is not something we can bear,

yet it is among the wise decrees of eternity.

Our beloved, our minds are sent soaring

toward you by bonds of pure affection—ask no more.

    Within us are thirst for reunion and a fire of sorrow;

but for consolation, a mountain would melt from its heat.

Your water sources are from us, and your spring remains

with you, while the thirsty have no hope.

So we shrink from remembrance; nothing relieves thirst

except it—yet in hearts it burns fiercer than flames.

The choking pangs of separation stir the torments of longing,

and remembrance reopens their wound whenever it has healed.

May breezes of relief, through our Lord's kindness,

blow, bringing the company together after it was scattered.

And may the meadows of fellowship take on a verdant hue

with a shower of God's mercy pouring down,

quenching the parched, thirst-maddened ones after their torment,

and may water draw near them for a first draught and another.

Our beloved, no one controls his own affairs,

nor can any kind of stratagem avert destiny.

We desire repose, gladness, and companionship,

and that is a matter not attributable to causes.

    The All-Merciful has indeed ordered His servants' affairs;

so set aside 'until,' or 'when,' or 'perhaps,' and 'whether.'

He orders what He chooses: such is His governance,

though its fetter seems tight to our eyes.

We must be content with whatever fate brings,

and welcome the bitter sap and honey we sip.
