O brother of ʿAbs, the proud defenders,

and noble man renowned for kindness,

you were stirred by excellence, chivalry, and

lordship and glory, as swords quiver,

because one among us is stricken: you shoulder

the burden and dispel the distressed man's calamity.

If you seek the heights, it is no wonder:

the noble seeks only what is noble.

Among us you are like the crown jewel in

the crown, and like spring beside autumn.

    لم تزد في علاك بالتوصيف

    Even without praise, you are the pride of ʿAbs;

description has added nothing to your eminence.

Glory inscribed letters for the nobles,

and with your right hand it traced those letters.

You have filled Time with glory and excellence.

Pause a little: the vessels' capacity has grown too small.

Every attainment falls short of yours, as does

the measure of any inherited or newly won glory.

No one who claims glory can equal

you, nor is everything they have built lofty.

I have not traded you for other men, having become

certain of the base coin and counterfeits among them.

This is my story and the story of my age:

they envied me and denied my good deeds.

when you were for me, against them, the cutting edges of swords.

They sought to corrupt what I had inscribed of my perfection,

in rancor, through distortion and misreading.

They undervalued me and falsely gave short measure,

and for them you have the Sūrah of Short Measure.

Such, brother of noble virtues, is the view Time

has held of a noble man's perfection.

The children of Time have an illness that cannot be cured

by any remedy, until they meet their deaths.

Do not try to cure them with perfection:

the age's affliction lies in a noble man's perfection.

Dung beetles die at a waft of

perfume, yet live happily in the privy.

The dignity of knowledge has ennobled my station,

and I have discerned every shallow fool.

Would that I knew: will Time ever relent?

Among Time's daughters is the shaking of skulls.

    كل حر بصخرة مقذوف

    How strange! In it, glory is not safe;

every free man is pelted with a rock.

What does Time seek in the exaltation of

the scoundrel and the abasement of the noble, virtuous man?

And Time's excuse for what I endure

is the noble's monopoly on goodness,

and resolves stirred by nobility of

soul, and ambition that grays the head of fate's reversals,

and the glorious man's charge into terror, never

awaiting good fortune or recoiling from anything feared.

You stood, ʿAbd al-Rahman, on my behalf in a cause

where they wronged me with injustice like that of al-Tufuf.

The heretics denied what they denied,

and you countered their denial with acknowledgment.

    Diseased breasts among them oozed

with evil grudges and harsh reproach.

    بل دحضت الدعوى برأي حصيف

    You did not leave them unchallenged on disgrace's carpet;

rather, you refuted their claim with discerning judgment.

    يرشح الظرف جوهر المظروف

    Evil emerges from evil depths;

a vessel oozes the essence of what it contains.

Take my praise, like a jewel kept

hidden, and set it where earrings hang.

    وبديع الأقلام محض الصريف

    My pen is wondrous, a charmer of hearts;

while the marvel of other pens is mere squeaking.

Leave them amid disgrace and denial; I am

    the world's al-Mutanabbi, without affectation.
