My God, this is the station of fear and hope,

And this is the place of one seeking refuge, holding firm.

My God, You did not set me in the station of prayer

For rejection, desolation, despair, and disappointment.

My God, those who call upon You do not suffer through prayer,

Nor does a humble worshipper's submission end in deprivation.

My God, were it not for an eternal glance

Toward me, You would not have stirred me to make my prayer.

My God, my herald of an answer is a prayer

I chant while God is present with me.

My God, no barrier keeps my prayer from You,

Nor my resolute intentions and steadfast determination.

My God, the doors of prayer, for whoever calls,

Stand open; so hear my prayer and my cry.

You see all things, Lord, yet are not seen,

And at the highest vantage stands the station of divinity.

To You is the final destination, and through You comes all strength,

And from You comes hope of averting every grave concern.

My God, I abandoned the means to Your good pleasure

Through the enticements of my devil and my audacious soul.

Nothing remains to me but devotion and hope

As a bond and a means of approach to my Master.

Divine generosity suffices me as a bond,

Though my soul's deeds and my conduct be foul.

I have no means toward what I seek from You

By which to attain my request, save my own helplessness.

The loftiest of my stations and purest of my actions

Is, with repentance, entrusting my affliction to You.

Your decree, if I surrender, proceeds as He wills,

And if I do not surrender, it still accords with the divine will.

To You, and an affirmation of the measure of my servitude.

This is a station indispensable to servanthood,

Through which you stand before the Real in every presence.

My God, my venturing into what You abhor

Is as nothing beside God's pardon.

My approach to goodness is a power You bring

To me—otherwise, where are my own power and strength?

My obedience is no favor bestowed on You; rather,

To Your Essence, my Lord, belong all glory and grace.

Nor is there any good speech or righteous deed ascending

That I have raised, Lord, by any merit of my own.

You revealed Yourself through generosity in every visible sign,

And fitted us for nearness in every direction.

You called to Your good pleasure, with creation made to hear,

And illumined with gnosis the people of spiritual truth.

So Your enjoining duties, O God, is a lavish bestowal of grace.

My God, my needs are easy for You,

Though their magnitude exceeds all my power can devise.

My God, among my soul's needs is Your turning in mercy

Upon me, forgiveness, and pardon for my lapse.

Nothing I seek from You, my Master,

Contradicts—O my Succor!—the generosity of divinity.

Nor is there in my deliverance from Your punishment a speck

That contradicts the nature of the wisdom of divine oneness.

Nor in my punishment is there a speck that diminishes Your self-sufficiency,

My God, though I were subjected to every punishment.

What would the All-Merciful, whose way is forbearance, gain

By punishing a servant after true repentance?

My God, if the remorse of one who disobeyed

Is repentance, then I am remorseful for my sin:

The remorse of a servant seeking his Lord's face,

    With the repentance of one made clear-sighted after heedlessness;

    And hopes for nothing but the bounty of Lordship;

    Your perfection, O my Succor, is the outcast's refuge;

I offered up my soul, defiled by its sins,

That You might wash it in eternal mercy.

That You might deal gently with me amid grievous ordeals.

My God, by God's majesty I ask Your good pleasure,

And I ask You, O God, for sincerity in love,

And triumph in the abode of eternity, my Master, and deliverance

    From the Fire, among the saved of the best community;

    وعدلاً وإحساناً ونور سريرة

    And blessing, faith, and the certainty of one sincere;

    And justice, kindness, and light within the heart;

And the removal of misery from me, and ease in my dying.

I ask You, O God, for patience in affliction,

For my soul is fretful and my resolve is weak.
