I dallied with her, kissing the anemone.

I handed her cups of tea,

And she said, "This is how nectar tastes."

As though the cup, in her hand and mouth,

Were agate within agate within agate.

تقول وملؤها لعب وضحك

أتعدل شرب شاهيكم بريقي

She says, brimming with playfulness and laughter,

"Would you equate drinking your tea with my saliva?"

فلقت لها منى نفسي أفيقي

بريقك ينطفي لهب الحريق

Then I said to her, "My soul's desire, come to your senses!

With your saliva the fire's flame is quenched."

فأدنت ثغرها مني وقالت

تمتع بي إلى وقت الشروق

تمتع بي إلى وقت الشروق

Then she drew her mouth close to me and said,

"Take your pleasure in me until the hour of sunrise."

فبت أمص وردة وجنتيها

فبت أمص وردة وجنتيها

وأرشف جمر مبسمها الشريف

وأرشف جمر مبسمها الشريف

So I spent the night sucking the rose of her cheeks,

And sipping the embers of her noble smiling mouth.

فلما أذهلت عقلي ورشدي

فلما أذهلت عقلي ورشدي

طفقت أصيح يا هادي الطريق

طفقت أصيح يا هادي الطريق

Then, when she had bewildered my mind and judgment,

I began to cry out, "O guide of the way!"
