هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod تسبيحglorification فطرتيmy innate nature
هو اللّه بسم اللّه تسبيح فطرتي
هوHe اللّهGod إخلاصيmy sincere devotion وفيand in اللّهGod نزعتيmy yearning
هو اللّه إخلاصي وفي اللّه نزعتي
‘He is God; in God's name’ is my innate nature's glorification.
In the name of Allah, the praise of my innate nature
‘He is God’ is my sincere devotion, and in God is my yearning.
In Allah is my sincerity and to Allah my inclination
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ذاتيmy essence تجردتbecame divested
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ذاتي تجردت
وهامتand became enraptured بمجلىby the manifestation of النورlight عينthe very core of حقيقتيmy reality
وهامت بمجلى النور عين حقيقتي
He is God; in God's name, my essence shed its attachments,
In the name of Allah, my essence stripped itself bare
And the very core of my reality was enraptured by the manifestation of light.
And the eye of my truth roamed the majestic light
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ضاءتshone فأشرقتand grew radiant
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ضاءت فأشرقت
بأنوارthrough the lights of نورthe light of اللّهGod نفسthe soul of هويتيmy identity
بأنوار نور اللّه نفس هويتي
He is God; in God's name, it shone and grew radiant,
In the name of Allah it shone radiantly
Through the lights of God's light—the soul of my identity.
With the lights of Allah's light, my soul lit up
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod فيin كلevery لحظةmoment
هو اللّه بسم اللّه في كل لحظة
بأسرارthrough the mysteries of سرthe secret of الجمعunion جمعgathered تشتتيmy scatteredness
بأسرار سر الجمع جمع تشتتي
He is God; in God's name, at every moment,
In the name of Allah, in every moment
Through the mysteries of union's secret, He gathered my scattered being.
With the secrets of the secret of unity, my dispersion gathered
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ذراتthe atoms of عالميmy world
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ذرات عالمي
خواتمهماthe endings of them both بدءa beginning كعالمlike the world of ذرتيmy atom
خواتمهما بدء كعالم ذرتي
He is God; in God's name, the atoms of my world—
In the name of Allah, particles of my world
The endings of both are a beginning, like the world of my atom.
Their rings are the beginning, as is the particle of my world
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod هبتstirred فشاهدتand witnessed
هو اللّه بسم اللّه هبت فشاهدت
بروقlightning flashes جلالof majesty منfrom أناI اللّهGod غيبتيmy absence
بروق جلال من أنا اللّه غيبتي
He is God; in God's name, it stirred and witnessed
In the name of Allah, I stirred and witnessed
The lightning flashes of majesty from ‘I am God’—my absence.
Flashes of glory, from “I am Allah”, my absence vanished
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللهGod شاهدتI witnessed اسمهHis name
هو اللّه بسم الله شاهدت اسمه
فتاهتand became lost بافناءthrough the annihilation of الفناءannihilation أنيتيmy selfhood
فتاهت بافناء الفناء أنيتي
He is God; in God's name, I beheld His name,
In the name of Allah, I witnessed His name
And my selfhood was lost through the annihilation of annihilation.
And melted away in annihilation of annihilation, my selfhood
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod فقريmy poverty محققmade real
هو اللّه بسم اللّه فقري محقق
غذائيmy sustenance وذليand my abasement باسمهin His name عينthe very essence of عزتيmy might
غذائي وذلي باسمه عين عزتي
He is God; in God's name, my poverty, made real,
In the name of Allah, my poverty is realized
Is my sustenance; my abasement in His name is the very essence of my might.
My sustenance and humility, by His name, are my honour
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod نورthe light of جلالهHis majesty
هو اللّه بسم اللّه نور جلاله
بهthrough it احترقتwere consumed آفاتthe blights of نفسيmy soul ونشأتيand my created nature
به احترقت آفات نفسي ونشأتي
He is God; in God's name, the light of His majesty—
In the name of Allah, the light of His majesty
Through it, the blights of my soul and my created nature were consumed.
With it, defects of my soul burned away and I was reborn
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod أسرارthe mysteries of اسمهHis name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه أسرار اسمه
بهاthrough them صعقتwere struck down عنيaway from me شياطينthe demons of شهوتيmy desire
بها صعقت عني شياطين شهوتي
He is God; in God's name, the mysteries of His name—
In the name of Allah, the secrets of His name
Through them, the demons of my desire were struck down, away from me.
With them I was struck down, devils of desire
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod تزكوgrow pure خواطريmy thoughts
هو اللّه بسم اللّه تزكو خواطري
وتصدقand is sincere إلاonly عنfrom مراضيهwhat pleases Him لفتتيmy turning
وتصدق إلا عن مراضيه لفتتي
He is God; in God's name, my thoughts grow pure,
In the name of Allah, my thoughts grew pure
And my turning is sincere, arising only from what pleases Him.
And sincere, not for my vain wishes did they lean
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod جردتI stripped bare وحدتيmy oneness
هو اللّه بسم اللّه جردت وحدتي
لوحدتهfor His oneness إذsince منهfrom Him ليfor me فيهin Him وحدتيmy oneness
لوحدته إذ منه لي فيه وحدتي
He is God; in God's name, I stripped my oneness bare
In the name of Allah, my oneness stripped bare
For His oneness, since my oneness is from Him, for me, in Him.
For His oneness, as from Him to Him is my oneness
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod أنسيmy solace شهودهbeholding Him
هو اللّه بسم اللّه أنسي شهوده
ولوand if غيبتهhid Him العينthe eye متI would die بوحشتيof my desolation
ولو غيبته العين مت بوحشتي
He is God; in God's name, my solace is beholding Him.
In the name of Allah, the witnessing of Him brought me intimacy
And were the eye to hide Him, I would die of my desolation.
And if eyes missed Him, I would die of desolation
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod أوقفتI dedicated رؤيتيmy vision
هو اللّه بسم اللّه أوقفت رؤيتي
عليهto Him ودينيand my faith مخلصاًsincerely devoting نفسيmy soul رؤيتيmy vision
عليه وديني مخلصاً نفسي رؤيتي
He is God; in God's name, I dedicated my vision
In the name of Allah, I fixed my sight
To Him, and my faith, sincerely devoting my soul and my vision.
Upon Him alone, dedicating my soul purely to seeing Him
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod حجيmy pilgrimage وعمرتيand my lesser pilgrimage
هو اللّه بسم اللّه حجي وعمرتي
إلىto بيتهHis House المعمورthe well-frequented إذsince هوit بضعتيa part of me
إلى بيته المعمور إذ هو بضعتي
He is God; in God's name, my pilgrimage and lesser pilgrimage
In the name of Allah, my pilgrimage and umrah
Are to His well-frequented House, since it is a part of me.
To His frequented house, as it is my shelter
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod نفسيmy soul مشاعريmy sacred sites
هو اللّه بسم اللّه نفسي مشاعري
ونسكيand my worship حياتيmy life والمحبةand love وقفتيmy standing
ونسكي حياتي والمحبة وقفتي
He is God; in God's name, my soul is my sacred sites,
In the name of Allah, my soul, my feelings
And my worship is my life, and love is my standing.
And my ritual, my life, and my love are dedicated
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod لولاwere it not for صلاتهHis blessing
هو اللّه بسم اللّه لولا صلاته
عليَّupon me لعزتنيwould elude me صلاتيmy prayer وسجدتيand my prostration
عليَّ لعزتني صلاتي وسجدتي
He is God; in God's name, were it not for His blessing
In the name of Allah, without His prayers upon me
Upon me, my prayer and prostration would be beyond my reach.
My prayers and prostrations would have no might
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ماnever صمتI fasted لحظةa moment
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ما صمت لحظة
علىdespite أننيthat I لمdid not تعهدknow الفطرbreaking the fast فطرتيmy innate nature
على أنني لم تعهد الفطر فطرتي
He is God; in God's name, I have never fasted for a moment,
In the name of Allah, not a moment passed
Though my innate nature has never known the breaking of the fast.
That I forgot my covenant to the innate nature
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod وتريmy odd-numbered prayer شهادتيmy testimony
هو اللّه بسم اللّه وتري شهادتي
وتلكand that صلاةprayer الوترthe odd-numbered فيin جنحthe cover of ظلمتيmy darkness
وتلك صلاة الوتر في جنح ظلمتي
He is God; in God's name, my witr prayer is my testimony,
In the name of Allah, my testimony
And that is the witr prayer under cover of my darkness.
And the prayer of night vigil in the wings of darkness
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod جاهدتstrove شوكتيmy might
هو اللّه بسم اللّه جاهدت شوكتي
فكانتand was لهfor Him فيهin Him بهthrough Him منهfrom Him نصرتيmy victory
فكانت له فيه به منه نصرتي
He is God; in God's name, my might strove,
In the name of Allah, I struggled mightily
And my victory was for Him, in Him, through Him, from Him.
And so in it, by it, from Him came my triumph
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod كونthe fact of اضافتيmy belonging
هو اللّه بسم اللّه كون اضافتي
إليهto Him زكاتيmy almsgiving وهيand it is أفخرthe proudest نسبتيmy affiliation
إليه زكاتي وهي أفخر نسبتي
He is God; in God's name, the fact of my belonging
In the name of Allah, my attribution
To Him is my almsgiving, and it is my proudest affiliation.
To Him is my purification, and my noblest lineage
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod محقthe effacement of ارادتيmy will
هو اللّه بسم اللّه محق ارادتي
مراديmy desire واثباتيand my affirmation لمحويof my effacement بغيتيmy aim
مرادي واثباتي لمحوي بغيتي
He is God; in God's name, the effacement of my will
In the name of Allah, realized is my will
Is my desire; affirming my effacement is my aim.
My purpose, my affirmation, erasing my desire
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod نفذthe fulfillment of مشيئتيmy will
هو اللّه بسم اللّه نفذ مشيئتي
وماليand I have no بشيءin anything جزءshare حوليmy power وقوتيand my strength
ومالي بشيء جزء حولي وقوتي
He is God; in God's name, my will is fulfilled,
In the name of Allah, His will was made manifest
And my power and strength have no share in anything.
I have no power but through His empowering gifts
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod لوif عارضconfronted الفناannihilation
هو اللّه بسم اللّه لو عارض الفنا
حياتيmy life لمwould not تذهبdepart حياتيmy life بموتتيwith my death
حياتي لم تذهب حياتي بموتتي
He is God; in God's name, were annihilation to confront
In the name of Allah, if my annihilation opposed life
My life, my life would not pass away with my death.
My life would not leave with my death
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod فيin كلevery واردinward inspiration
هو اللّه بسم اللّه في كل وارد
لهfor Him منfrom يقينيmy certainty فيهin Him كلevery تثبتassurance
له من يقيني فيه كل تثبت
He is God; in God's name, in every inward inspiration,
In the name of Allah, in every circumstance
For Him, from my certainty in Him, comes complete assurance.
Certainty in Him steadies me in each step
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod فيin كلevery خطوةstep
هو اللّه بسم اللّه في كل خطوة
لهfor Him ملكan angel منىfrom me يطيرflies بسبحتيwith my glorification
له ملك منى يطير بسبحتي
He is God; in God's name, at every step,
In the name of Allah, in each footstep
For Him, an angel from me takes flight with my glorification.
His angel oversees me and lifts up my swimming pace
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod أسنىthe loftiest of معارجيmy ascents
هو اللّه بسم اللّه أسنى معارجي
إليهto Him نزوليmy descent فيthrough مداركthe depths of خشيتيmy reverent fear
إليه نزولي في مدارك خشيتي
He is God; in God's name, the loftiest of my ascents
In the name of Allah, smooth became my ascent
To Him is my descent through the depths of my reverent fear.
To Him, my descent in the realms of awe
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ملكdominion over عوالميmy worlds
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ملك عوالمي
بتدبيرthrough the governance of سرthe secret of الاسمthe name فيwithin قهرthe mastery of قبضتيmy grasp
بتدبير سر الاسم في قهر قبضتي
He is God; in God's name, dominion over my worlds,
In the name of Allah, sovereign of my worlds
Through the governance of the name's secret, lies within my subduing grasp.
By the mystery of the Name's arrangement in subduing my fist
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod قهريmy mastery مسخرsubjugates
هو اللّه بسم اللّه قهري مسخر
شياطينthe demons of نفسيmy soul تحتbeneath كرسيthe throne of عزتيmy might
شياطين نفسي تحت كرسي عزتي
He is God; in God's name, my mastery subjugates
In the name of Allah, my domination compelled
The demons of my soul beneath the throne of my might.
The devils of my soul under the throne of my honour
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod والجدand striving باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه والجد باسمه
بجدthrough the majesty of اسمهHis name أربتrose علىabove الجدstriving خطوتيmy step
بجد اسمه أربت على الجد خطوتي
He is God; in God's name, and striving is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and seriousness by His name
Through the majesty of His name, my step rose above striving.
Seriously, by the name of seriousness, my steps grew firm
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod والفيضand the outpouring باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه والفيض باسمه
تجلىwas revealed لعقليto my intellect كنهthe essence of كلevery حقيقةreality
تجلى لعقلي كنه كل حقيقة
He is God; in God's name, and the outpouring is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and abundance by His name
The essence of every reality was revealed to my intellect.
Was unveiled to my intellect, the quiddity of every truth
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod والفتحand opening باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه والفتح باسمه
فتوحاتthe openings of عرفانيmy gnosis وكشفيand my unveiling استهلتdawned
فتوحات عرفاني وكشفي استهلت
He is God; in God's name, and opening is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and opening by His name
The openings of my gnosis and unveiling dawned.
My knowings of gnosis and unveilings were inaugurated
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod والوهبand bestowal باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه والوهب باسمه
أفاضHe poured forth علىupon الوهبbestowal كلevery خفيةhidden thing
أفاض على الوهب كل خفية
He is God; in God's name, and bestowal is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and granting by His name
He poured every hidden thing into the bestowal.
He poured upon granting every mystery
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod والنورand light باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه والنور باسمه
تشعشعradiated نورthe light of اللّهGod فيwithin بشريتيmy human nature
تشعشع نور اللّه في بشريتي
He is God; in God's name, and light is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and light by His name
God's light radiated within my human nature.
The light of Allah shone in my humanness
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod والقدسand holiness باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه والقدس باسمه
تقدسbecame holy توحيديmy affirmation of oneness وايمانand the faith of فطرتيmy innate nature
تقدس توحيدي وايمان فطرتي
He is God; in God's name, and holiness is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and sanctity by His name
My affirmation of oneness and my innate nature's faith became holy.
My monotheism and innate faith were sanctified
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod والجمعand union باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه والجمع باسمه
تجمعcame together فرقانيmy differentiation وفرقتand was divided جمعتيmy union
تجمع فرقاني وفرقت جمعتي
He is God; in God's name, and union is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and gathering by His name
My differentiation came together, and my union was divided.
My separation was gathered and my gathering separated
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod والروحand the spirit باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه والروح باسمه
تداركنيreached me in time منfrom روحهHis spirit كلevery منيتيmy wish
تداركني من روحه كل منيتي
He is God; in God's name, and the spirit is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and spirit by His name
From His spirit, each of my wishes reached me in time.
I was sustained by His spirit from every death wish
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod واللطفand gentleness باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه واللطف باسمه
سرىcoursed لطفهHis gentleness فيthrough شقوتيmy misery فاضمحلتand it vanished
سرى لطفه في شقوتي فاضمحلت
He is God; in God's name, and gentleness is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and gentleness by His name
His gentleness coursed through my misery, and it vanished.
His gentleness flowed in my misery and so it faded away
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod والعزand might باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه والعز باسمه
تعززتI grew mighty عزاًwith a might قاهراًsubduing كلevery عزةmight
تعززت عزاً قاهراً كل عزة
He is God; in God's name, and might is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and might by His name
I grew mighty with a might that subdued every might.
I was strengthened with overwhelming might beyond all might
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod والقهرand subjugation باسمهthrough His name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه والقهر باسمه
قهرتI subdued عدائيmy foes تحتbeneath قهريmy mastery وسطوتيand my force
قهرت عدائي تحت قهري وسطوتي
He is God; in God's name, and subjugation is through His name;
In the name of Allah, and subjugation by His name
I subdued my foes beneath my mastery and force.
I subjugated those I willed, my weakness and humiliation
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod هيبةthe awe of اسمهHis name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه هيبة اسمه
كستنيclothed me نوراًin light منof جلالmajesty وهيبةand awe
كستني نوراً من جلال وهيبة
He is God; in God's name, the awe of His name
In the name of Allah, the reverence of His name
Clothed me in light of majesty and awe.
Clothed me in light, majesty and awe
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod عزةthe might of اسمهHis name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه عزة اسمه
أقامتestablished محاليmy stations فيin رضاهHis favor وسلطتيand my authority
أقامت محالي في رضاه وسلطتي
He is God; in God's name, the might of His name
In the name of Allah, the honour of His name
Established my stations and my authority in His favor.
Established my abode in His good pleasure and authority
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod سلطانthe sovereignty of اسمهHis name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه سلطان اسمه
غلبتI overcame بهthrough it منwhoever فاقsurpassed أيديmy might وقوتيand my strength
غلبت به من فاق أيدي وقوتي
He is God; in God's name, the sovereignty of His name—
In the name of Allah, the dominion of His name
Through it, I overcame whoever surpassed my might and strength.
With it I overpowered those beyond my hands and power
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod سطوةthe overwhelming force of اسمهHis name
هو اللّه بسم اللّه سطوة اسمه
قصمتI crushed بهامنwith it, whoever شاءwished for وهنيmy weakness وذلتيand my abasement
قصمت بهامن شاء وهني وذلتي
He is God; in God's name, the overwhelming force of His name—
In the name of Allah, the sway of His name
With it, I crushed whoever wished for my weakness and abasement.
With it I broke those I willed, my softness and disgrace
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ذيPossessor of الملكdominion أذعنتthey yielded
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ذي الملك أذعنت
وشاهتand were disfigured وجوهthe faces of المعتدينthe aggressors وذلتand were humbled
وشاهت وجوه المعتدين وذلت
He is God; in God's name, Possessor of dominion, they yielded,
In the name of Allah, He of the possession, I yielded
And the faces of the aggressors were disfigured and humbled.
And the faces of the insolent were downcast and disgraced
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ذيPossessor of الجبروتirresistible might كمhow many
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ذي الجبروت كم
يديtwo hands of جبروتtyranny حاولتنيassailed me فشلتfailed
يدي جبروت حاولتني فشلت
He is God; in God's name, Possessor of irresistible might, how many
In the name of Allah, He of omnipotence, how many
Pairs of tyrannical hands assailed me and failed!
Arms of power that sought me out failed
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ذيPossessor of الملكوتthe kingdom منfrom
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ذي الملكوت من
خزائنهHis treasuries وفريmy abundance ويسريand my ease وغنيتيand my sufficiency
خزائنه وفري ويسري وغنيتي
He is God; in God's name, Possessor of the kingdom, from
In the name of Allah, He of the kingdom, from
His treasuries come my abundance, my ease, and my sufficiency.
His treasuries came my abundance, affluence and wealth
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ذيPossessor of المجدglory إنtruly ليI have
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ذي المجد إن لي
بتمجيدهthrough glorifying Him مجداًa glory علىabove الملكيةroyalty
بتمجيده مجداً على الملكية
He is God; in God's name, Possessor of glory, truly I have,
In the name of Allah, He of glory, verily
Through glorifying Him, a glory above royalty.
Through glorifying Him I gained glory of kingship
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ذيPossessor of الكبرياءgrandeur لاnot
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ذي الكبرياء لا
أذلI am abased وأشقىand I am miserable وبالذكرand through remembrance وصلتيmy bond
أذل وأشقى وبالذكر وصلتي
He is God; in God's name, Possessor of grandeur, I shall not
In the name of Allah, He of pride, I do not
Be abased or miserable; my bond is through remembrance.
Debase myself, connecting by His remembrance
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ذيPossessor of النورlight أهتديI find guidance
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ذي النور أهتدي
وأهديand I guide وأمحوand I erase باسمهthrough His name آيthe signs of ظلمتيmy darkness
وأهدي وأمحو باسمه آي ظلمتي
He is God; in God's name, Possessor of light, I find guidance,
In the name of Allah, He of light, I follow guidance
And I guide others, and erase through His name the signs of my darkness.
And guide, and by His name erase every darkness
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ذيPossessor of الحمدpraise والثناand acclaim
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ذي الحمد والثنا
محامدهpraises of Him منيfrom me اعترافيmy acknowledgment بحيرتيof my bewilderment
محامده مني اعترافي بحيرتي
He is God; in God's name, Possessor of praise and acclaim—
In the name of Allah, He of praise and laudation
My praises of Him are my acknowledgment of bewilderment.
His praises from me are admission of my bewilderment
هوHe اللّهGod بسمin the name of اللّهGod ذيPossessor of العرشthe Throne لمhave not أضقbeen constrained
هو اللّه بسم اللّه ذي العرش لم أضق
وامدادهand His aid العرشيfrom the Throne يوسعwidens حيطتيmy scope
وامداده العرشي يوسع حيطتي
