فلماذا يهيم في كل وادي

God created an intellect for the morally accountable person;

God created a mind for the morally accountable;

so why does it wander through every valley?

شرك النفس لا يغيب عن العق

ل فكيف الوقوع في الأصفاد

ل فكيف الوقوع في الأصفاد

The soul’s snare is never hidden from the intel—

The self’s snare is not hidden from reason;

—lect; how, then, could it fall into fetters?

so how does one fall into shackles?

ينفذ العقل حيث لا ينفذ الرم

ح ويجري أمام حضر الجواد

The intellect penetrates where the spe—

Reason penetrates where the spear cannot,

—ar cannot, and races ahead of swift steeds.

and runs ahead of the steed’s gallop.

لا يرد العقول باب عن الح

ق ولا تنطوي بقرع العوادي

No gate can turn minds away from the tru—

No door bars minds from truth,

—th, nor do they yield beneath adversity’s blows.

يعجز الجيش عن مهم وكم فض

An army may fail before a grave task—yet how often

An army fails at a weighty task; yet how often

has one discerning man scattered the foremost ranks!

has a man of understanding shattered the breasts of the vanguard!

نحن لا ندرك العواقب إلا

نحن لا ندرك العواقب إلا

أن للعقل منفذاً في الدآدي

أن للعقل منفذاً في الدآدي

We cannot fathom the consequences, except

We do not discern outcomes, yet

that the intellect finds a passage through calamities.

reason has a passage through the darkest nights.
