But he gives with his reason as the balance,

Yet he gives with the measure of his mind

Bulging saddlebags to the true members of God's household.

The truths of the people of God, dragging burdens

وينفل حيث النفل حمد وحكمة

وينفل حيث النفل حمد وحكمة

نوافل ليست دون وكف السحائب

نوافل ليست دون وكف السحائب

And he gives freely where giving is praiseworthy and wise—

And he shakes off where shaking off is praise and wisdom

Bounties no less than the downpour of the clouds.

Extra prayers not less than holding back the clouds

يحيد عن الاسراف نفساً زكية

يحيد عن الاسراف نفساً زكية

فيعصمها في صالحات المواهب

فيعصمها في صالحات المواهب

He turns a pure soul away from extravagance,

He turns away an edifying soul from excess

Thus safeguarding it through worthy gifts.

Thus protecting it in the virtues of gifts

ولو قام فيما تشتهي النفس من يد

ولو قام فيما تشتهي النفس من يد

لضايق جدواه مناط الكواكب

لضايق جدواه مناط الكواكب

And if any hand could rise to what the soul desires,

And if he stood in what the soul desires of hand

His bounty would crowd the hanging-place of the stars.

Its generosity would be constricted by the orbit of stars

يراقب بين القبض والبسط حكمة

فمذهبه في الجود خير المذاهب

فمذهبه في الجود خير المذاهب

He heeds wisdom between closing and opening his hand,

He observes wisdom between tightening and giving

So his way in generosity is the best of ways.
