ومما شجاني إنها يوم ودعَت

شجاها النوى مثلي فنحن شريكان

And among the things that grieved me was that, the day she bade farewell,

And what pained me is that the day she bid farewell

Parting grieved her as it did me, so we are partners.

Her tears flowed like mine, for we are companions

كأن سقيط الدمع من عبراتنا

كأن سقيط الدمع من عبراتنا

على عاتقينا نثر در ومرجان

على عاتقينا نثر در ومرجان

It was as though the teardrops falling from our weeping

As if the falling of tears from our crying

Upon our shoulders were scattered pearls and coral.

Were pearls and coral strewn upon our shoulders

خذوا حدثوني عن فريق تحملوا

خذوا حدثوني عن فريق تحملوا

فذكرهم أنسي ورَوحي وريحاني

فذكرهم أنسي ورَوحي وريحاني

Come, tell me of a company who have departed,

Tell me about those who have borne separation

For remembrance of them is my solace, my repose, and my sweet basil.

For their memory gives joy and delight to my soul
