Indeed we, when the wisps of scattered cloud grow scarce—
When I say the jugs of Qazaa`
they give full measure with a brimful measuring-cup,
Filled to the brim and freely poured,

and the drinker leaves them after draughts—
The drinker's breast warmed from a draft,
give them bright blades bearing little rust as mates:
Egged on by modest maids,

مثل قدامى النسر ما مس بضع
each a quivering blade that trembles when shaken,
If a groom should waver all wobble too,
like a vulture’s foremost flight feather, having touched no flesh.

A skilled herdsman follows them, no coward,
Tailed by a heedless, headless crew,
neither worn out with age nor feeble;
No glory there, no gall there too,

he mounts the cairns like one startled,
He answers panic's every call,
you think him on guard, though he has not been frightened.
You'd think him a meandering fool met a dead end road,

You see cracks on his feet amid caked grime,
His legs lodged in the mud's crevice,
some healed and stitched shut, others bleeding and torn open.
Barren gravel and loosened rocks abound,

The wild beasts had not yet cast themselves into the nimble hunters’ hands,
Beasts scarcely tempt those frail hands,
so they reached the cracked waterhole before the later rains.
So he comes before times undone.
