    When we saw white-stockinged horses

and a band of aggressors in a clamorous host,

we flew at them with every long-limbed mare,

and every sleek-coated steed, like gold,

    and every quivering, straightened lance,

bearing a spearhead like a tongue of flame,

and every keen sword with a mark upon its back,

and a Mashrafi sword, like salt, with grooves,

and every ample coat of double-linked mail,

of David's weaving, without tangled links.

When we met, speech died, and

death turned as a millstone turns upon its spindle.

So each of us sought to turn his opponent

away from himself, while souls were in anguish.

    وإن حملنا جثوا على الرُّكَبِ

    If they charged, we did not leave our positions;

and if we charged, they sank to their knees.
