    تروّي عظامي في التراب عروقُها

    When I die, bury me beside a grapevine's root;

    its roots will water my bones in the earth.

    And do not bury me in the wilderness, for I

    fear that, when I die, I shall not taste it.

    I drink it early, at sunrise, and sometimes

    its evening draught comes swiftly to me after dusk.

    فمن حقّها أن لا تُضاعَ حُقُوقُها

    And the cup and tawny wine have the rights of one cherished;

    so their due is that their rights should not be neglected.

    I price it at a wineskin for a young camel; at that price

    its traders are brought to us, and we transport it.

    Despite my drinking wine, I have a protective sense of honor,

    when the throats of the clan's women tighten,

    and, distraught, they have no time to fasten their waist-wraps,

    their voices grief-stricken, their mouths already dry.

    And I protect the neighbor of the house from whatever befalls him,

    and honor guests with hospitality upon their arrival by night.
