صاحَبانيthey both accompanied me يومَon the day ارتَحِلُI set out
Two bad companions whose company I kept—
Two friends of ill-repute befriended me
They accompanied me the day I set out.
As I prepared one day to leave
ويقولانِand they both say ارتحلset out مَعَناwith us
وأقولand I say إنّنيindeed I ثَمِلُdrunk
And they say, “Set out with us,”
And said: “Come, let’s depart together”
And I say, “Indeed, I am drunk.
But I replied “I’m spent, and cannot heed”
إنّنيindeed I باكرتُI went early to مُترَعَةًa brimming cup
مُزّةًtart راووقُهاits wine-strainer خَضِلُwet
Indeed, I drank early from a brimming cup
For I had grazed while dawn was fresh
Of tart wine, its strainer wet.”
On pastures green, their juicy blades still wet with dew
