إذاwhen تحطَّمَتِwere shattered الراياتُthe banners والحَلَقُand the coats of mail
O eye, weep for Abu Jabr and his father,
O eye shed tears for Abu Jabir and his father
when the banners and coats of mail were shattered.
When the flags are broken and the necks are ringed
يومٌa day بيومِin return for the day of أبيAbu جَبرٍJabr وإخوتِهِand his brothers
والنفسُand the soul نفسانtwo souls منهاfrom it الهَولُterror والشَّفَقُand apprehension
A day in return for the day of Abu Jabr and his brothers;
A day for the day of Abu Jabir and his brothers
and the soul is twofold: from it come terror and apprehension.
And the soul is of two kinds: horror and awe
ياO ضُلَّruin ضُلَّruin المناياthe fates ماnot تَرَكنَthey have left لناfor us
عِزّاًhonor نَبُوءُwe lay claim بهto it ماas long as هُدِّلَcoo الوَرَقُthe gray doves
O ruin, ruin upon the fates! They have left us no
O misguided by death that left us naught
honor we might claim, so long as the gray doves coo.
Of honor to boast of since the leaves fell
