أنَّىhow تَسَدَّتmade her way نحوَناtoward us أُمُّmother of يُوسفٍYusuf
ومِنand from دُونِbefore مَسراهاher night journey فَيافٍvast deserts مجاهلٌtrackless
How did Umm Yusuf make her way toward us,
with trackless deserts barring her night journey,
إِلىto فِتيةٍyoung men بالطَفِّat al-Taff نيلَتwere struck down سَرَاتُهُمtheir chiefs
وغودِرَand were left behind أفراسٌhorses لهُمbelonging to them ورَواحلٌand riding camels
to young men at al-Taff whose chiefs were struck down,
and whose horses and riding camels were left behind?
وأضحىand became أبوfather of جَبرٍJabr خلاءًempty بُيُوتُهُhis houses
بماwith what كانused to يَعفوهاfrequent them seeking gifts الضِّعافُthe weak الأراملُthe destitute
And Abu Jabr's houses now stand empty,
where the weak and destitute once came seeking gifts.
وأضحىand came to be بنوthe sons of عَمروٍAmr لَدَىat الجِسرِthe bridge منهُمُfrom them
إِلىto جامِدِcold الأبياتthe dwellings جُودٌgenerosity ونائلُand gifts
And Banu Amr were now at the bridge; from them
came generosity and gifts to those whose dwellings were cold.
وماand not لُمتُI blamed نفسيmyself فيهمُregarding them غيرَexcept أنَّهاthat it
إِلىtoward أجَلٍan appointed end لمhas not يأتِهاcome to it وهوand it is عاجلُclose at hand
I did not blame myself over them, save that my soul
is bound for an appointed end not yet come to it, though near.
وماand not رِمتُI stirred حتىuntil خرَّقواthey tore through برِماحِهمwith their spears
ثيابيmy clothes وجادتand poured forth بالدّماءِwith blood الأباجلُthe great veins
I did not stir until they had torn, with their spears,
my clothes, and the great veins poured out blood;
وحتىand until رأيتُI saw مُهرَتيmy filly مُزوَئِرّةًrecoiling

and until I saw my filly recoiling
beside the elephant, her chest and flanks bleeding.
وماand not رُحتُI departed حتىuntil كنتُI was آخرَthe last رائحٍone departing
وَصُرِّعَand were felled حوليaround me الصالحونthe worthy الأماثِلُthe finest
I did not leave until I was the last to depart,
with the worthy, the finest men, felled around me.
مرَرتُI passed علىby الأنصارthe Ansar وَسطَamid رِحالهمtheir encampment
فقلتso I said لهمto them هلis there منكُمamong you اليومَtoday قافِلُone returning home
I passed the Ansar amid their encampment
and said to them: "Is any of you returning home today?"
وقرّبتُand I readied رَوّاحاًRawwah وكُوراًand a camel saddle ونُمرِقاًand a cushion

And I readied Rawwah, a saddle, and a cushion,
while Bakr and Wa'il were left behind at Ullays.
ألاah لَعنَmay curse اللهُGod الذينthose whom يَسُرُّهمit gladdens them
رَدايَmy death وماand not يَدرونthey know ماwhat اللهُGod فاعلُwill do
Ah, may God curse those who would rejoice
at my death, not knowing what God will do.
