Have you not seen me bid farewell to what I used to drink

of wine, now that my head is gray—may good be yours?

And I used to drench the crown of my head with its potent wine,

when the prescribed punishment was enforced and when I was beaten.

So when they lifted the prescribed punishments from me, I gave it up,

and resolved on good concerning it—for good is to be sought.

And the drinking companion said to me when I gave it up:

"Are you serious about this, or are you playing?"

And they said, "Your giving up wine today is strange!"

As though I were mad and my skin were scabby.

I shall give it up for God's sake, then denounce it,

and forsake it in its house, where it is drunk.
