يقولsay أُناسٌsome people إشربdrink الخمرَwine إنهاfor it
يقول أُناسٌ إشرب الخمرَ إنها
إذاwhen القومُthe people نالوهاthey partook of it أصابواthey gained الغنائماthe spoils
إذا القومُ نالوها أصابوا الغنائما
Some people say, “Drink wine—for it is true that
Some people say, “Drink wine, for
when men partake of it, they carry off the spoils.”
when people partake of it, they win spoils.”
فقُلتُso I said لهمto them جَهلاًin ignorance كَذبتمyou lied أَلمdid … not? ترَواyou see
فقُلتُ لهم جَهلاً كَذبتم أَلم ترَوا
أَخاهاits brother (companion) سفيهاًfoolish بعدafter ماthat كانhe had been حالماًforbearing
أَخاها سفيهاً بعد ما كان حالماً
So I told them, “You lie in ignorance. Have you not seen
So I said to them, “You lie in ignorance! Have you not seen
her boon companion foolish, though once forbearing,
its brother turn foolish after he had been forbearing,
وأضحىand he spent the morning وأمسىand he spent the evening مُستَخَفّاًheld in contempt مُهَيَّماًdistraught
وأضحى وأمسى مُستَخَفّاً مُهَيَّماً
وحسبُكand enough for you عاراًas shame أنthat ترىyou see المرءَthe man هائماًwandering aimlessly
وحسبُك عاراً أن ترى المرءَ هائماً
by morning and evening despised and crazed?
and spend morning and evening scorned and distraught?
Shame enough for you—to see a man wandering distraught.”
And it is shame enough for you to see a man wandering aimlessly.”
