Were it not for you, my love would not exist,

    nor would Layla’s dwellings,

nor would any camel-driver ever have sung,

nor would a caravan have traveled a mile.

O driver of the pale camels, slow down.

Have you passed through the encampment or not?

I loved them, and they tested me [conjectural reading of unclear words].

Do not love passion as though it were easy.

Where, then, was I, and where have I come?

A beloved of mine has indeed revealed himself.

I loved him, and he answered me [last phrase conjectural].

So I became worthy in his eyes.

So we neither heard nor saw

anything except your love, easy for me.

You appeared to me in beauty.

So my drinking increased and rose.

For you are my soul and my body.

There is no separation from you; otherwise—

    Until, when it revealed itself,

your love settled in my heart.
