    The world grows narrow around us when you are absent from us,

    and our souls depart from us in longing.

    فإن غبتموا عنّا ولو نفاً متنا

    For separation from you is death, and nearness to you is life;

    for if you are absent from us, even for [a breath], we die.

    وإن جاءضنا عنكم بشيرُ اللقا عشنا

    We die in separation from you and live in nearness to you;

    and if a herald of reunion comes to us from you, we live.

    ألا إنَّ تذكارَ الأحبَّة ينعشُنا

    And we live by remembering you when we do not see you;

    indeed, remembrance of loved ones revives us.

    For were it not for your inner realities, which our hearts behold,

    when we are awake, and in sleep when we lose awareness,

    we would die of grief at your absence and of yearning.

    But in spirit, your inner realities are with us.

    ولولا هواكُم في الحشا ما تحرَّكنا

    Recounting tales about you [stirs us];

    and were it not for love of you within our breasts, we would not stir.

    So tell whoever forbids ecstasy to its devotees:

    If you have not tasted the nature of love’s wine, leave us be.

    When souls quiver with longing for reunion,

    bodies dance, O you ignorant of the inner meaning.

    Do you not see the caged bird, young man,

    when it remembers its native lands and longs for its dwelling?

    Through birdsong it eases what is in its heart,

    so its limbs quiver, outwardly and inwardly.

    And it dances in the cages, longing for reunion,

    and those endowed with reason are stirred when it sings.

    So too are the souls of lovers, young man:

    longings stir them toward the most exalted realm.

    Shall we compel them to patience while they yearn?

    And can one who has beheld the inner reality be patient?

    If you have not tasted what others have tasted in love,

    then, by God, you whose heart is empty, do not rebuke us.

    And accept what we profess, for we

    sometimes cry out when our longings overcome us.

    إذا لم نجد كتم المواجيد صرّحنا

    And our hearts quiver as we listen;

    when we find no way to conceal our ecstasies, we speak openly.

    تراقُ دمانا جهرةً إن بها مجنا

    And in the innermost heart lie fine and subtle secrets;

    our blood is openly shed if we speak wantonly of them.

    So, O chanting guide of lovers, rise and sing as you stand,

    and softly chant the Beloved’s name for us, and soothe us.

    وإن أنكرَت عيناك شيئاً فسامحنا

    And guard our secret in our drunkenness from [our envier];

    and if your eyes find anything objectionable, forgive us.

    For when we are elated and our minds [are gladdened],

    and love’s wine intoxicates us, we cast restraint aside.

    فقد رقع التكليف في سُكرِنا عنّا

    So do not blame the drunken one in his drunkenness;

    for in our drunkenness, obligation has been lifted from us.
