The tidings proved true to me and coursed through my inmost self:

The news rang true in my inner self

that the eye of vision is the very eye of thought.

That the eye of insight is the eye of reflective thought

أغمض طرفَك ترى

أغمض طرفَك ترى

وتلوح أسرارُك

وتلوح أسرارُك

Close your eyes and you will see,

Close your eyelid and you will see

and your secrets will shine forth.

Your secrets loom

وافنَ عن الورى

وافنَ عن الورى

تبدُ لك أخبارُك

تبدُ لك أخبارُك

And efface yourself from all creation;

Turn away from all creation

your own tidings will be revealed to you.

Your tidings will become clear

وبصَقل المرا

وبصَقل المرا

يا نزول أغيارُك

يا نزول أغيارُك

And through polishing the mir—

With the polishing of the mirror

—rors, your worldly attachments fall away.

Oh descent of strangers

وتلوح بك أسرار من عيونِك تسري

وتلوح بك أسرار من عيونِك تسري

والتفت إن ظهر في سماك الدري

والتفت إن ظهر في سماك الدري

And secrets shine within you, flowing from your eyes;

Secrets from your eyes flow

and turn if the pearl-bright star appears in your sky.

And glance if there appeared in your sky a particle

ألفُلك فيكَ يدور

ألفُلك فيكَ يدور

ويُضيءُ ويلمَع

ويُضيءُ ويلمَع

The celestial sphere revolves within you

I revolve around you

and shines and gleams.

And illuminate and shine

والشموس والبُدور

والشموس والبُدور

فيك تغيب وتطلع

فيك تغيب وتطلع

And the suns and the full moons

The suns and the full moons

set and rise within you.

In you set and rise

فاقرأ معنى السطور

فاقرأ معنى السطور

التي فيك أجمَع

التي فيك أجمَع

So read the meaning of the lines

that are all within you.

That I have brought together in you

لا تغادر سطراً من سطورِكَ وادر

Leave out no line of your lines, and know

Do not miss any of your lines, realize

what the moon that courses within you means.

The sea of my thought is deep;

My sea of thought is deep

the fragrance of my musk wafts.

My musky wind is fragrant

من دخلهُ حقيق

من دخلهُ حقيق

لاش يخاف أن يغرَق

لاش يخاف أن يغرَق

Whoever truly enters it—

Whoever entered it, true

why should he fear drowning?

Has no fear of drowning

يدري هذا الطريق

يدري هذا الطريق

من كان عبداً للحق

من كان عبداً للحق

This path is known

Knows this path

to whoever is a servant of the Truth.

إن ذلك البحر لا يقاسُ ببحري

إن ذلك البحر لا يقاسُ ببحري

بحرُ فكري درر والزهرُ في بري

بحرُ فكري درر والزهرُ في بري

Indeed, that sea cannot be measured against my sea.

That sea cannot be measured against my sea

My thought's sea is pearls, and on my land are flowers.

My sea of thought is pearls and flowers on land

فانتَبَهت للخطاب

فانتَبَهت للخطاب

وسمِعتُ منّي

وسمِعتُ منّي

Then I awoke to the address,

So I heeded the address

and heard from myself.

And heard from me

كلّي عن كلي غاب

كلّي عن كلي غاب

وأنا عني مفني

وأنا عني مفني

My whole self vanished from my whole self,

All of me was absent from all of me

and I was effaced from myself.

And I from myself vanished

وارتفع لي الحجاب

وارتفع لي الحجاب

وشهِدتُ أنّي

وشهِدتُ أنّي

And the veil was lifted for me,

And the veil was lifted from me

and I witnessed that I

ما بقى لي آثار غبتُ عن أثري

لم أجِد من حضر في الحقيقة غير

لم أجِد من حضر في الحقيقة غير

had no traces left; I vanished from my own trace.

No traces remained, I was absent from my traces

I found no other present in reality.

I did not find anyone present in reality except

ساداتي وافهموا

المراد من قولي

And understand, my masters,

عن أحد من أهلي

This we do not conceal

No one understands my secret

My secret cannot be comprehended

except one who is like me.

سلكُ عقدي انتَشَر بدا لي دري

نظّمواهُ يا جوار إنَّني في سكري

نظّمواهُ يا جوار إنَّني في سكري

The thread of my necklace came undone; my pearls appeared to me.

Follow my strand, it spread, my inner reality appeared to me

Restring it, O maidens, for I am intoxicated.

Arrange it, O neighbors, I am indeed intoxicated
