O You who succor humankind after they have despaired,

Have mercy on servants who have stretched out poverty's palms,

And called down Your accustomed bounty; give them to drink

To their fill, with contentment in their Lord unshaken by wrath.

And treat all with the grace they have known,

O Just One, in whose judgment no injustice is seen.

Indeed, dust has become the beasts' pasture,

And birds go forth at dawn to glean among the pebbles.

And the earth is bare of the finest flowers,

As though it had never been adorned with vegetation.

And You are the most generous benefactor, toward whom are stretched

The hands of sinners, though they have wronged and dealt unjustly.

They communed with You while radiant splendor adorned the night,

As gray hairs adorn the blackness of the locks.

One, drinking from sin's brimming bucket, has choked on it,

And others, as You told us, have mingled good and evil.

And one luxuriating in life's delights imagines himself

Joining the ranks of those around the Throne.

And a heretic claims refreshment for himself apart from You,

Bewildered, he flounders in the snare of idolatry.

Each receives his share of what is decreed:

Some have risen, while others have fallen into desire.

    فرضٌ علينا لهُ التسليمُ مشتَرط

    A just decree from God concerning His creatures;

Submission to it is an obligation required of us.

And whoever confronts God's decree in protest

Is surely confronted by abandonment and error.

And what are humankind's sins beside His mercy?

And can drops be compared with the seas' overflow?

So we have no refuge but the Generous One and him

Who is found at the Pool, the foremost forerunner.

That is the Messenger, through whom all creation

Is joyful and glad on the Day of Resurrection.

May He bless him with a blessing that never ends—

He whose name is joined to his in the Remembrance.
