O You who bring relief to humankind after they have despaired,

have mercy on servants who have stretched out poverty’s palms.

And they called down Your accustomed bounty; give them drink,

a full draught, with their Lord’s favor undeterred by wrath.

And treat everyone with the bounty they have known,

O Just One, in whose judgment no injustice is seen.

Indeed, dust has become the beasts’ pasture,

and the birds go out at dawn, gleaning among the pebbles.

And the earth is bare of its robe of blossoms,

as though it had never adorned itself with plants.

And You are the most generous giver, to whom are stretched

the hands of sinners, though they oppress, though they deal unjustly.

They communed with You while radiant splendor adorned the night,

as gray strands adorn the blackness of the locks.

    وآخرونَ كما أخبرتنا خلطوا

    So one, drinking from sin’s brimming bucket, choked on it;

and others, as You have told us, mixed good deeds with bad.

And one lives amid life’s pleasures, believing

he joins the ranks of those around the Throne.

And a heretic claims a lord other than You for himself,

bewildered, floundering in the snare of associating partners with God.

    قومٌ ترقّوا وقومٌ في الهوى سقطوا

    Everyone receives his allotted share of what has been decreed;

some have ascended, and some have fallen into passion.

A decree from God, just toward His creation—

submission to it is a duty required of us.

And whoever confronts God’s decree in protest,

abandonment and error have surely confronted him.

And what are humankind’s sins beside His mercy?

And can drops be compared with the oceans’ outpouring?

So we have no refuge but the Generous One and him

who is found at the Pool, the forerunner who reaches the water first.

That is the Messenger, through whom all humankind

will be joyful and delighted on the Day of Resurrection.

May He bless him with a blessing without end—

He whose name is linked with his in the Remembrance.
