    حبّه ذخري

    My hours grew sweet with a beloved—like...

  2. ترغب من لا لنا عنه الفنى

    في صلاح أمري

    You seek one without whom we have no annihilation [wording unclear],

    In setting my affairs right.

  3. أنا هو شيخ الشراب ما في الملاح

    لذ لي التمزيق

    I am he, the master of wine—not among the fair [wording unclear].

    Rending became sweet to me.

  4. ابسطوا سجّادتي راحاً براح

    قربوا الإبريق

    Spread my prayer rug—wine with wine.

    Bring the ewer close.

  5. احملوا تغريدي في الإصطلاح

    يا ذوي التحقيق

    Take my singing in its special sense,

    O people of realization.

  6. يا أنا منه أنا حتّى أنا

    همتُ في سكري

    O I! From him am I—even I.

    I wandered in my drunkenness.

  7. سمعوني طيبَ ألحانِ الغِنا

    فعسى ندري

    Let me hear the sweet melodies of song,

    So perhaps I may understand,

  8. كي نفيق يا فقرا من سكرتي

    نقروا في العود

    That I may sober up, O poor ones, from my drunkenness.

    Pluck upon the lute.

  9. واحملوني فوق عرش كرمتي

    عاشق مفقود

    And carry me above my vine's trellis,

    A lost lover.

  10. واجعلوا من مائها في قبلتي

    واعصرُوا العنقود

    And place some of its water where I face in prayer,

    And press the cluster of grapes.

  11. واجعلوا أوراقَها لي كفناً

    ماؤها طهري

    And make its leaves a shroud for me;

    Its water is my purification.

  12. فوقُ أو من تحتُ أو عن ميمنا

    احفروا قبري

    Above, or below, or on the right,

    Dig my grave.

  13. بمتُ دنفاسي ودلفي والإزرار

    وبقيت عريان

    I [unclear verb] my [unclear], and my [unclear], and the fastening,

    And I remained naked.

  14. ومشيت بين دوحاتِ الديار

    وأنا نشوان

    And I walked among the dwellings' spreading trees,

    And I was intoxicated,

  15. بين خلّان وأكواسٍ تدار

    تسحرُ الأدهان

    Among companions and cups passed round,

    That bewitch the oils [perhaps 'minds'].

  16. ليس لي أصلاً على الشرب غنى

    والهوى سكري

    I cannot do without drinking at all,

    And love is my drunkenness.

  17. وانتموا يا ففرا يا أمنا

    أكتموا سري

    And affiliate yourselves, O [poor ones?], O trusted ones,

    Keep my secret.

  18. كان ظني أنَّني نعشقهُ

    وهو لي يعشق

    I thought that I loved him,

    Yet he loves me.

  19. أنا نبعدُ وهو يقربُ لي

    صر بي أرفق

    I draw away, while he comes near to me.

    Be gentler with me.

  20. تجلى الحب تدلى فدلي

    ساعة الذكر

    Love revealed itself, descended, then was lowered [reading uncertain],

    At the hour of remembrance.

  21. فحت أحداك احزاننا

    واختفى سري

    I gave off fragrance—[unclear word]—our sorrows.

    And my secret vanished.

  22. فهام البين دع ترشُقني

    سلموا مالي

    Let the [arrows?] of separation pelt me.

    Hand over my wealth.

  23. أنا نهواهُ وهو بمشقني

    سلّموا حالي

    I love him, while he [lashes me?].

    Accept my state.

  24. ساقني لمّا بدى أنشقني

    نشدَهُ الغالي

    He led me; when he appeared, he made me inhale

    His precious chant [reading uncertain].

  25. وهوَ لي روحٌ أقام البدنا

    هو في سري

    And he is my spirit, which has sustained the body.

    He is within my secret.

  26. لا تعُم تفرق في بحرنا

    ذاك هو بحري

    Do not swim—you will be scattered in our sea.

    That is my sea.
