لستُI do not أنسىforget الأحبابَthe loved ones ماas long as دمتُI remain حيّاalive
مذsince نأواthey went far away للنوىfor separation مكاناto a place قصيّاfar-off
I shall not forget the beloved ones as long as I live,
I will not forget my loved ones as long as I live,
since they journeyed far away to a distant place.
Since they went away in parting to a far-off place.
وتلواand they recited آيةَthe verse of الوداعfarewell فخرّواthen they fell down
خيفةَfor fear of البينseparation سجداprostrate وبُكيّاand weeping
They recited the verse of farewell, then fell down
And they recited the verse of farewell, then fell down,
in fear of separation, prostrate and weeping.
In fear of separation, prostrate and weeping.
ولذكراهمُand at their remembrance تسيحُflow دموعيmy tears
كلَّماwhenever اشتَقتI yearn بكرةًin the morning وعشيّاand in the evening
At their remembrance, my tears stream
And at their memory my tears flow,
whenever I yearn, morning and evening.
Whenever I yearn, morning and evening.
وأناجيand I commune with الآلهGod منfrom فرطthe intensity of وجديmy longing
كمناجاةِlike the communion of عبدهِHis servant زكريّاZechariah
In the extremity of my longing, I whisper to God
And I commune with God in my overwhelming longing,
as His servant Zechariah whispered to Him.
As His servant Zechariah communed with Him.
وهنَhas weakened العظمُthe bone بالبعادthrough separation فهَبso grant ليto me
ربّO Lord باللطفthrough kindness منfrom لدُنكَYour presence وليّاa guardian
My bones have grown frail from our distance; so grant me,
My bones have weakened from separation; so grant me,
Lord, in kindness, from Your presence, a friend.
O Lord, in Your kindness, a guardian from Your presence.
واستجبand answer فيin الهوىlove دعائيmy prayer فإنّيfor indeed I
لمnot أكنI have been بالدعاءin prayer ربِّmy Lord شقيّاdisappointed
Answer my prayer in love, for I
And answer my prayer in love, for I
have never, Lord, been disappointed in praying to You.
Have never been disappointed in prayer, my Lord.
قدindeed فرىhas torn قلبيmy heart الفراقparting وحقّاًand truly
كانwas يومُthe day of الفِراقِparting شيئاًa thing فريّاterrible
Separation has rent my heart—and truly,
Parting has indeed torn my heart, and truly
the day of parting was a terrible thing.
The day of parting was a terrible thing.
وأختفىand vanished نورُهُمtheir light فناديتُso I called ربّيmy Lord
فيin ظلامِthe darkness of الدجىnight نداءa call خفيّاhushed
Their light vanished, so I called to my Lord
And their light vanished, so I called to my Lord
in the darkness of deepest night, with a secret cry.
In the darkness of night, with a hushed call.

Our distance was not of my choosing, but
Separation was not of my choosing, but
was a matter predestined and decreed.
Was a matter foreordained and decreed.
ياO خليليّmy two friends خليانيleave me, you two ووجديand my longing
أناI أولىmost deserving بنارof the fire of وجديmy longing صليّاburning
O my two companions, leave me to my longing;
O my two friends, leave me alone with my longing.
I have the greater right to burn in its fire.
I am most deserving of burning in my longing's fire.
إنّindeed ليI have فيin الغرامpassionate love دمعاًtears مطيعاobedient
وفواداًand a heart صباthat fell in love وصبراًand patience عصيّاrebellious
In passion I have obedient tears,
Indeed, in love I have obedient tears,
a lovesick heart, and rebellious patience.
And a heart that fell in love, and rebellious patience.
أناI منbecause of عاذليmy reproacher وصبريand my patience وقلبيand my heart
حائرٌbewildered أيُّهُمwhich of them اشدُّmost intense عتيّاin defiance
Between my reproacher, my patience, and my heart,
I, faced with my reproacher, my patience, and my heart,
I stand bewildered: which of them is most defiant?
Am bewildered: which of them is most defiant?
أناI شيخُthe master of الغرامpassionate love منwhoever يتَّبعنيfollows me
اهلكI bring to ruin فيin الهوىlove صراطاًa path سويّاstraight
I am the master of love; whoever follows me,
I am love's master; whoever follows me,
I bring him to ruin in love, along a straight path.
I bring to ruin in love along a straight path.
أناI ميتُone dead from الهوىlove ويومَand on the day أراهُمI see them
ذلكَthat اليومُday يومَthe day when أبعثُI am resurrected حيّاalive
I am dead from love, but on the day I see them,
I am dead from love; and the day I see them,
that day will be the day I am raised alive.
That day is the day I am raised to life.
