I sailed upon a sea of tears,

my slender body was its vessel.

And its wind has torn my sails apart

since the hour of departure raged.

O neighbors, you have left my eyes

streaming down my cheek like springs.

    ما هكذا كانت الظنون

    You have dashed my expectations in love;

this was not what I had expected.

Show favor, and do not seek my death,

    for your abandonment is death.

And adorn the dwelling with your return,

and soothe the ailing one's burning anguish.

And grant the eye its slumber,

    and shorten my long night.

By God, by God, nothing has made me drink

the cup of death but your abandonment.

I have spent my lifetime loving you,

yet I have not fulfilled your promise.

    I already have longing enough,

so do not increase it with your rejection.

You have scattered my hosts in love,

and proved poor companions to the guide.

And you paid no heed to my submission,

and my stance, the stance of one abased.

O driver of al-Abbas amid the gatherings,

as deserts and wastelands come into view,

turn away from the former encampments,

and take them to the noblest of dwellings.

And if water grows scarce at the watering places,

or you seek a fire when making camp,

then seek water from my tears:

for many are their courses through the wilderness.

And draw fire from my ribs,

for my breast is filled with flame.

By God, if the domes come into view,

offer greetings to those dwelling in the domes,

and say to them: 'Your lover is stricken,

and his heart has yearned toward you.'

    O moon behind a veil,

may the full moon's radiance never be veiled from me.

A full moon: when it shines upon returning,

or appears among coffee trees and date palms,

the sun at its rising is eclipsed

    by its dazzling, lovely beauty.
