تذلَّلتI humbled myself فيin البلدانِthe lands حينwhen سبيتَنيyou took me captive
وبتُّand I spent the night بأوجاعِin the pains of الغوىwayward passion أتَقَلَّبُI toss and turn
I humbled myself through every land when you took me captive,
I humbled myself throughout the lands when you took me captive,
And spent my nights tossing in the torments of wayward love.
And I spent the night tossing in the pains of wayward passion.
فلوfor if كانthere were ليfor me قلبانtwo hearts عشتُI would live بواحدٍwith one
وأترُكُand I would leave قلباًa heart فيin هواكَlove for you يعذَّبُto be tormented
Had I two hearts, I would live on with one
For if I had two hearts, I would live with one,
And leave the other to be tortured by love of you.
And leave one heart to be tormented in love for you.
ولكنَّand yet ليI have قلباa heart تملَّكهُhas possessed it الهوىpassion
فلاso neither العيشُlife يهتناis pleasant ليto me ولاnor الموتdeath أقربُnearer
But I have only one heart, and passion has possessed it;
But I have a heart that passion has possessed,
So neither is life sweet to me, nor does death draw nearer.
So life is not sweet to me, nor is death any nearer.
كعصفورةٍlike a sparrow فيin كفِّthe palm of طفلٍa child يضمهاhe clasps her
تذوقُshe tastes سياقthe throes of الموتdeath والطفلwhile the child يلعبُplays
Like a sparrow in the palm of a child who clasps it,
Like a sparrow in the palm of a child who clasps her,
Tasting the throes of death while the child plays—
She tastes the throes of death while the child plays.
فلاso neither الطفلُthe child ذوpossessed of عقلٍsense يحنُّfeels compassion لماfor what بهاafflicts her
ولاnor الطيرُthe bird ذوpossessed of ريشٍfeathers يطيرُit flies فيَذهبُand so it goes away
The child has no sense to pity what it suffers,
So the child has no sense to pity her plight,
And the bird has no feathers to fly away.
Nor does the bird have feathers to fly and get away.
تسمّيتُI became known بالمجنونas the madman منfrom ألمthe pain of الهوىpassion
وصارتand came to be بيabout me الأمثالproverbs فيamong الحيthe tribe تُضرَبُare cited
For love’s anguish I came to be called “the Madman,”
I came to be called the madman from the pain of passion,
And throughout the tribe my plight became proverbial.
And I became the subject of proverbs among the tribe.
فياso, O معشرَcompany of العُشّاقِlovers موتواdie صبابةًof ardent longing
كماjust as ماتَdied بالهجرانِfrom abandonment قيسQays معذَّبtormented
O company of lovers, die of ardent longing,
So, O company of lovers, die of ardent longing,
As Qays died, tormented by separation.
Just as Qays died, tormented by abandonment.
