I embarked upon a sea of tears,
I sailed a sea of tears;
my frail body its ship.
Its ship is my slender body.

Its wind tore apart my sails
So its wind tore my sails apart,
from the moment the hour of departure stormed.
Since the hour of departure raged.

O neighbors who left my eyes
streaming down my cheeks like springs,
Flowing over my cheek like springs,

in love you disappointed all my hopes—
You disappointed my expectations in love;
such were not the hopes I cherished.
Such were not my expectations.

Show grace, and do not seek my death,
Show favor, and do not seek my death,
for your abandonment is death.
For your abandonment is death.

Beautify the dwelling by returning,
And beautify the dwelling by returning,
and cool the lovesick sufferer’s anguish.
And cool the ailing one's burning anguish.

And grant the eye leave to sleep,
and shorten my long night.
And shorten my long night.

By God, by God, nothing gave me
By God, by God, nothing has made me drink
the cup of death but your abandonment.
The cup of death except your desertion.

I spent my lifetime in love for you,
yet did not fulfill your covenant.
Yet your promise to me was not fulfilled.

The longing I bear is enough for me,
I have enough longing already,
so add no more through your rejection.
So do not add to it with your rejection.

In love you scattered all my forces
You scattered my throngs in love,
and treated the guide’s companionship badly.
And marred the guide's companionship.

You paid no heed to my submission
And you paid no heed to my submission,
or to my standing there like one abased.
Nor my stance—the stance of one abased.

Turn aside from the former dwellings,
and make with it for the noblest abode.
And with it, make for the noblest of dwellings.

Then seek water from my tears,
how many paths they have through the wilderness!
For many are their courses through the wilderness.

And take fire from between my ribs,
And draw fire from my ribs,
for deep within my breast a flame is lodged.
For my bosom is filled with flame.

By God, if the domes come into view,
greet those dwelling beneath the dome,
Greet those dwelling in the domes,

And tell them: your lover is stricken,
and his heart yearns toward you.
And his heart has turned in longing toward you.

O moon behind a veil,
the full moon’s radiance was never veiled from me—
May the full moon's radiance not be veiled from me.

Or shows itself among coffee trees and palms,

Eclipses the sun at its rising
its dazzling, beautiful splendor.
With its dazzling, lovely beauty.
