Suʿād has departed, and yesterday her cord was severed.

Would that a tie to her from her cord might return.

A distant, wayward exile carried her far away,

So my soul flew into fragments from longing for her.

Since she left, my eye has found no rest, nor comfort in

The taste of sleep when a sleeper slumbers.

She denied my soul the solace by which it lives,

And my breast, once sound, split apart.

My reprover began blaming me for what was lost,

And before your reproach, you did not enrich one who withheld.

Gently—leave me, for my nature has overpowered me.

And I see ample room in God's lands.

My glory is ancestral, and what I spend is replenished by

God's bounty; the best wealth is that which brings benefit.

Time has never bitten me without making me more generous,

Nor have I yielded to it when it betrayed or deceived.

Nor does my tested mettle soften despite afflictions,

Amid calamities, when time touches me with disgrace.

Nor do its pressures soften any of my wood,

When an aged man softens or yields beneath them.

Whatever good God provides, I am content with it,

Nor do I die in anguish over what has passed me by.

Nor do I deceive the master of the house when he is heedless,

Nor do I say of anything lost, 'What became of it?'

Indeed, I praise people possessed of ancestral honor,

In whose words God has placed no foul abuse:

Pure in their tested mettle despite all afflictions—

Were musk squeezed from their limbs, it would well forth.

By this I mean the sons of Shihāb; indeed, they

Are the noblest of people in character and beneficence.
