I say to myself, seeking solace and consolation:

In Malik there had indeed been a successor to Mismaʿ.

O good Mismaʿ, whom shall we call when there descends

A calamity upon the people, and they fall into dispute?

O Mismaʿ—alas for Iraq, which has no leader!

Through whom, we wonder, will the imperiled man under suspicion find safety?

Those eyes, there in the city, grief-stricken,

Weep for you, since shrouds and sweeping death carried you off.

They have pillowed you on a right hand never before used as a pillow,

And an outpouring of generosity, when destruction carried you off.

You were the meteor with which the enemy was struck,

And the sea from which buckets of bounty were drawn.
