أُحبُّ على لذاذتنا شقيقا

أُحبُّ على لذاذتنا شقيقا

وأبغضُ مثلَ ثعلبةَ الثقيل

وأبغضُ مثلَ ثعلبةَ الثقيل

I love Shaqiq for our shared pleasure,

I love a brother for his sweetness

And loathe the likes of tiresome Thaʿlabah.

And hate one like unyielding fox

له غمُّ على الجُلساءِ مُؤذٍ

له غمُّ على الجُلساءِ مُؤذٍ

نوافِلُه إذا شربوا قليل

نوافِلُه إذا شربوا قليل

He brings a hurtful gloom upon his companions;

Whose distress harms the sitters

His gifts are few when they drink.

His extra drinks, though they be few
