I am kept from reproaching my drinking companion when he grows drunk

and says hurtful things to me in his drunkenness,

by my dignity and my knowledge of wine and its drinkers.

And none keeps noble men company over wine like a man of sound judgment.

So I do not reproach a drinking companion of mine for a slip,

nor for a lapse that occurred while we were drinking wine.

I brushed aside with my flank the words of my friend and companion,

while we drank tawny wine of sweet fragrance.

Then, when he went too far, I said, 'Take it unmixed,

for you come from a people of radiant, great chieftains.'

So I kept pouring him wine, and drinking as much as

I poured for my brother, until the brightness of dawn appeared.

And he chewed his tongue, which, when he was sober,

he would wield in every kind of verse [assuming 'the ten' is a typo for 'poetry'].
