By my life, the people of Syria thrust better with spears,
By my life! The people of Damascus thrust with spears,
and better guard what one fears to see dishonored.
And protect what scandals threaten,
همthey المُقدِمونَthose who drive forward الخيلَthe horses تدمىbleed نحورُهاtheir chests
إذاwhen ابيضَturn white منfrom هولِthe terror of اللقاءbattle المسائحthe locks of hair
They drive the horses forward, their chests bleeding,
They who lead the horses with blood dripping from their necks,
when locks turn white from the terror of battle.
When the polished blades flash in the horror of battle.
فَرَرناwe fled عجالاًin haste عنaway from بنيناour sons وأهلِناand our families
وأزواجناand our wives إذwhen عارضتناconfronted us الصفائحthe sword-blades
We fled in haste, abandoning our sons and our families,
We fled hastily from our sons, family,
and our wives, when the sword-blades confronted us.
And wives when misfortune befell us.
جبنّاwe were cowardly وماyet there is no مِنfrom موردthe watering place of الموتdeath مَهربٌescape
ألاah قبَحتmay they be disgraced تلكthose النفوسsouls الشحائحmiserly
We were cowards, though there is no escape from death’s watering place.
We were cowardly, though no escape from death,
Ah, shame upon those miserly souls!
How ugly are those stingy souls.
تركناهُمwe left them صحنَthe open plain of العراقِIraq وناقلتand galloped off
بناwith us الأعوجياتthe horses of A‘waj’s line الطولthe tall ones الشرامحthe long-limbed ones
We left them on Iraq’s open plain, and off galloped
We left them the plains of Iraq, and the curved swords
the tall, long-limbed steeds of A‘waj’s line, carrying us.
Carried us, their blades long and straight.
فقلso say للحوارياتto the fair-skinned women يبكينَlet them weep غيرناothers than us
ولاand not تبكناweep for us إلّاexcept الكلابَthe dogs النوابحthe barking ones
So tell the fair-skinned women to weep for others, not us;
Say to the maidens who cry for others,
and let none weep for us but the barking dogs.
Do not cry for us except howling dogs.
بكينَthey wept إليناto us خشيةًfor fear أنthat تُبيحَهاwould ravage them
رماحُthe spears of النصارىthe Christians والسيوفand the swords الجوارحthe wounding ones
They wept to us, afraid of being ravaged by
Cry to us in fear that the spears of Christians
the Christians’ spears and the wounding swords.
And sharp swords will violate them.
بكينthey wept لكيماso that يمنعوهُنَّthey might protect them منهمfrom them
وتأبىbut refuse قلوبٌhearts أضمرتهاconcealed them الجوانِحthe ribs
They wept for their men to shield them from those foes,
Cry so they may prevent them from the enemy,
but the hearts hidden within the ribs refused.
Though hearts harbor what claws scratch.
وناديتناand you called to us أينwhere الفرارُescape وكُنتُمand you used to
تغارونyou guard jealously أنthat تبدوshould appear البرىthe rings والوشائحand the jeweled sashes
And you called to us: “Where can you flee? Yet you once
They called us: Where is escape while you
guarded jealously against rings and jeweled sashes being seen.
Were jealous that the land and skulls appeared?
أأسلمتموناhave you surrendered us? للعدّوto the enemy علىupon القناthe spear-shafts
إذاwhen انتُزعتhave been torn away منهاfrom them القرونُthe horns النواطحthe butting ones
Have you surrendered us to the enemy on spear-shafts,
Did you surrender us to the enemy at Qanna
when their butting horns have been torn away?
When the lofty minarets were pulled down?
فماso not غارfelt protective jealousy منكمamong you غائرٌa jealous man لحليلةٍfor a wife
ولاnor غربٌa fiery man عزّتwere dear عليهto him المناكحthe wives
So none of you showed jealous concern for a wife,
None of you felt jealous for a woman in nightshirts
nor did any fiery man who held his women dear.”
Or absence that weighed heavily on a husband.
