ولما رأيت سراةَ قومي

ولما رأيت سراةَ قومي

سكوناً لا يثوب لهم زعيم

سكوناً لا يثوب لهم زعيم

And when I saw the nobles of my people

When I saw my people's caravan

motionless, with no leader returning to them,

In stillness with no leader to guide them,

هتفت بمسمع وصدى أميرٍ

هتفت بمسمع وصدى أميرٍ

وقبرِ معمّرٍ تلك القروم

وقبرِ معمّرٍ تلك القروم

I cried out to Mismaʿ and the shade of Amīr,

I called out loudly so the prince could hear

and to Muʿammar’s grave—those mighty chiefs.

And the tomb of the elder those ruins.
