يُهدّدنيhe threatens me القعقاعُal-Qa‘qa‘ فيin غيرَother than كنههِhis true measure
فقلتُso I said لهto him بكرٌBakr إذاif رُمتنيyou assail me تُرسيmy shield
Al-Qa‘qa‘ threatens me beyond his proper bounds.
The croaker threatens me though I know not his essence,
So I told him: Bakr is my shield if you assail me.
So I said to him, “You're a novice if you provoke me.”
لعمريby my life لئنeven if أوعدتنيyou threatened me ماnot ذعرتنيyou frightened me
فدونكَso go ahead فاغضبthen rage إنif غضبتَyou grow angry علىat الشمسِthe sun
By my life, though you threatened me, you have not frightened me.
By my life, if you made me a promise you wouldn’t frighten me,
Go on, then—if you must rage, rage against the sun.
So provoke if you’re provoked, though the sun be your goal.
كأناas though we وإيّاكُمand you إذاwhen الحربُwar بينَناbetween us

We and you, when war stands between us, seem
When war's between us, we and you are
Like lions anointed with saffron and yellow wars-dye.
Like lions stained with saffron at the fight.

Our faces appear like lamps in the dark nights,
Our faces will seem torch-lamps of darkness
Whenever we meet, and like smooth Heraclean blades.
When we meet, with coats-of-mail like mirrors shining bright.
هناكthere السعودauspicious omens السانحاتُpassing rightward جرَتhave run لناfor us
وتجريand fly لكمfor you طيرُbirds البوراحill-omened leftward flights بالنَحسwith ill fortune
There lucky omens have sped rightward in our favor,
There the death-distribution was wont to be ours,
While for you the leftward birds fly with ill fortune.
But now success in war for you appears in sight.
وماand not أنتyou قعقاعُQa‘qa‘ الإكمنonly like one (text uncertain) معيwith me
كأنّكas though you يوماًone day قدalready نُقِلتَwere carried إلىto الرمسthe grave
And you, Qa‘qa‘, are only like one with me,
Yet you, croaker of el-Kemin, are not my peer;
As though you had already been borne one day to the grave.
Once transported to Er-Rimth, you took hasty flight.

بهbearing him غَطفانيّاًa man of Ghatafan وإلاor else فمنthen from عبسِ‘Abs
I think the post-mules are traveling by night toward you,
I think the steeds of the cold carried you off in disorder,
Bearing him, a man of Ghatafan—or else one of ‘Abs.
With Ghatfānī horsemen behind, or else ‘twas from fright.

Or else with the dauntless one—woe to you if they travel by night,
Or else 'twas in valour you went, with nothing missing,
Bearing him, his spear-shaft unyielding, no weakling.
No weakened girthing of saddle, no gear hooked awry.
فعُمالُناfor our officials أوفىmore faithful وخيرٌand better بقيّةٌlasting worth
وعُمّالكُمand your officials أهلُpeople of الخيانةtreachery واللبسand deceit
For our officials are more faithful and of greater lasting worth,
For our footmen are loyal and excellent remnants,
While your officials are people of treachery and deceit.
While your footmen are the traitorous and the sly.
وماand no لبنيfor the sons of عمروٍ‘Amr عليَّupon me هوادةٌleniency
ولاnor للرّبابfor al-Ribab غيرُanything but تعسٍruin منof التَعسِruin
And Banu ‘Amr shall find no leniency with me,
The folk of ‘Amr have no love for me,
Nor al-Ribab anything but ruin upon ruin.
Nor ease for the bard, but sorrow until he die.
