Ah, many a day and night I had in Bust,

but none like my bygone days in Tustar.

I dwelt there, serving the choicest aged wine

    to a noble-faced man among Yashkur’s chieftains.

We would race to drink the wine until we loathed it,

and it would leave us like a fallen man covered in dust.

    فأصحبت قد بُدّلَت طول التوقُّر

    That was an age whose pleasures have passed away;

so I grew tame, given lasting sober restraint instead.

My good sense returned, and I came to shun the

wine, though formerly I had been like a bewildered man.

And whenever I discern truth’s straight course,

I do not fall short of it, even when reminded.

I shall race in piety and in knowledge, after

racing to obey the notorious wayward man’s command.

Through God come my ability, my resourcefulness, and my strength,

and from Him come my many good deeds and my wrongs.
