إذا اعتكرت ظلماء ليلٍ ونوّمت
عيونُthe eyes رجالٍof men واستلذواand they delighted in المضاجِعاthe beds
عيونُ رجالٍ واستلذوا المضاجِعا
When night's darkness thickens and sleep closes
men's eyes, and they delight in their beds,
سماhe made his way نحوَtoward جارthe neighbor البيتِof the house يَستامhe seeks عرسَهhis wife
سما نحوَ جار البيتِ يَستام عرسَه
يزيدYazid دبيباًcreeping للمعاناةِfor the pursuit قابعاcrouching
يزيد دبيباً للمعاناةِ قابعا
He makes for the man next door, seeking his wife—
Yazid, creeping along, crouching to pursue his aim.
وإنand if إمكنتهshe granted him access جارةُthe female neighbor البيتِof the house أوor رنتshe gazed
وإن إمكنته جارةُ البيتِ أو رنت
إليهtoward him أتاهاhe came to her بعدafter ذلكthat طائعاwillingly
إليه أتاها بعد ذلك طائعا
And if the woman next door grants him access, or gazes
toward him, he comes to her afterward, willingly.
