    Su'ad departed, and yesterday her cord was severed.

    And would that a tie to her, a strand of her cord, might return.

    A far-flung exile, veering aside, bore her far away,

    So my soul flew to pieces from yearning for her.

    Since she left, my eye has found no rest, nor comfort in

    The taste of slumber whenever a sleeper sleeps.

    وقد أكونُ صحيحَ الصدرِ فانصدعا

    I denied my soul the solace by which it lives;

    And my breast was once sound, but it split asunder.

    وقبل لومك ما أغنيت مَن مَنَعا

    My reproacher began blaming me for what was lost;

    And before your reproach, you had not enriched one who withheld.

    وقد أرى في بلاد اللَه متَّسعا

    Gently now—leave me be, for my nature has overpowered me;

    And in God's lands I see ample room.

    My glory is ancestral, and what I have spent is replenished by

    God's bounty, and the best wealth is what benefits.

    ولا استكنتُ له إن خانَ أو خدَعا

    Time has never bitten me without increasing my generosity;

    Nor have I submitted to it, even if it betrayed or deceived.

    Nor does my tested mettle soften under afflictions,

    Amid calamities, even when what touches me leaves its mark.

    Nor do its probings soften my timber,

    When even the long-lived soften under them or yield.

    ولا أموت على ما فاتني جزَعا

    Whatever good God has made available, I am content with it;

    Nor do I die of anguish over what has passed me by.

    ولا أقولُ لشيء فاتَ ما صنَعا

    Nor do I trick the master of the house when he is off guard;

    Nor do I say of something gone, 'What became of it?'

    لم يجعلِ اللَهِ في أقوالهم قَذعا

    I indeed praise people of ancestral honor;

    God has placed no foul abuse in their words.

    Pure in their tested mettle, despite afflictions,

    Were musk squeezed from their extremities, it would well forth.

    By this I mean the sons of Shihab, and they are indeed

    The noblest of people in character and deeds of kindness.
