بانتdeparted سُعادُSu'ad وأمسand yesterday حبلُهاher bond انقطعاwas severed
وليتَand if only وصلاًunion لهاwith her منfrom حَبلهاher bond رجعاwould return
Su'ad departed, and yesterday her bond was severed;
Happiness has appeared, though yesterday her rope was cut,
if only some bond of union with her might return!
If only her rope would return and join again.
شَطّتwent far away بهاwith her غُربةٌexile زوراءُcrooked نازحةٌfar-distant
فطارتso flew النفسُthe soul منfrom وجدٍlonging بهاfor her قطعاin pieces
A distant, crooked exile bore her far away;
Exile has dragged her, a cheating outcast,
so my soul flew to pieces from longing for her.
My soul has flown from the pain that cut it off.
ماnot قرّتfound rest العينُthe eye إذwhen زالتshe departed فينفعهاso as to soothe it
طعمtaste الرُقادِof slumber إذاwhen ماever هاجعٌa sleeper هجعاslept
My eye has found no rest since she left, to enjoy
My eyes found no rest when she left,
the taste of slumber whenever a sleeper sleeps.
Sleep brings no comfort when turmoil stirs.
مَنعتdenied نفسيmy soul منfrom روحٍrelief تعيشit lives بهby it
وقدand once أكونُI was صحيحَsound of الصدرِbreast فانصدعاthen it split
My soul was denied the relief by which it lives;
I spared my soul the life it could have lived,
my breast was once sound, but then it split apart.
Though my chest be whole, it cracked open.
غدَتbegan تلومblaming علىover ماwhat فاتwas lost عاذلتيmy reprover
وقبلand before لومكyour reproach ماnot أغنيتyou enriched مَنone who مَنَعاwithheld
My reprover began blaming me for what was gone;
My critic blames me for what I missed,
and before your reproach, you had enriched no one who withheld.
But before you blame, who could forbid what happened?
مهلاًgently ذرينيleave me be فإنيfor indeed I غالنيhas overpowered me خُلُقيmy nature
وقدand indeed أرىI see فيin بلادthe lands of اللَهGod متَّسعاample room
Easy! Leave me be, for my nature has overpowered me;
Wait, leave me be, my nature misled me,
and I see ample room in the lands of God.
And I see in God's land there is space enough.
فخريmy glory تليدٌinherited وماand what انفقتI spent أخلفهhas replaced it
سيبthe bounty of الإلهGod وخيرُand the best المالِwealth ماwhat نفعاbenefited
My glory is inherited, and what I have spent is replenished
My pride is longstanding, whatever I spent, He replaces,
by God's bounty; the best wealth is what does good.
Leave it to God, the best money is what benefits.
ماnever عضّنيbit me الدهرُTime إلاexcept that زادنيincreased me in كرماًgenerosity
ولاnor استكنتُI submitted لهto it إنif خانَit betrayed أوor خدَعاdeceived
Time has never bitten me without making me more generous;
Time has only increased my generosity
nor do I yield to it if it betrays or deceives.
I did not submit, though it betrayed or deceived.
ولاnor تلينُsoftens علىunder العلّاتafflictions معجَمتيmy tested mettle
فيin النائباتِcalamities إذاwhen ماever مسّنيit touches me طبَعاwith disgrace
Nor does my tested mettle soften under afflictions,
My purpose does not soften in disasters,
amid calamities, whenever it touches me with disgrace.
When arbitrary misfortune strikes me.
ولاnor تُلينُsoften منany of عوديmy wood غمائزُهits pressures
إذاwhen المُعمرthe aged man منهاunder them لانyielded أوor خضَعاbowed
Nor do its pressures soften my wood,
The notches of my bow do not go slack
when the aged man yields to them or bows.
When the seasoned wood complains or weakens.
ماwhatever يسّرmade available اللَهGod منof خيرٍgood قنعتُI am content بهwith it
ولاnor أموتI die علىover ماwhat فاتنيpassed me by جزَعاin anguish
I am content with whatever good God makes available;
I am content with the good God ordains,
nor do I die in anguish over what has passed me by.
And do not die of grief for what escapes me.
ولاnor أُخاتِلُI deceive ربَّthe master of البيتِthe house غفلتَهhis unwariness
ولاnor أقولُI say لشيءof a thing فاتَthat is gone ماwhat صنَعاit did
Nor do I deceive the householder when he is off guard;
I do not reproach the Lord of the House for his neglect,
nor do I ask of anything lost, 'What became of it?'
Or say of a thing lost, "Why did this happen?"
إنّيindeed I لأمدحُI surely praise أقواماًpeople ذويpossessing حَسَبٍancestral honor
لمnot يجعلِhas placed اللَهِGod فيin أقوالهمtheir words قَذعاfoul abuse
I do indeed praise people of noble standing,
I praise people of merit and lineage
in whose words God has placed no foul abuse,
God did not create any baseness in their words.
الطّيبينthe pure علىdespite العلّاتafflictions معجَمةًin tested mettle
لوif يُعصَرُwere squeezed المسكُmusk منfrom إطرافهمtheir extremities نَبَعاit would gush forth
men of pure mettle through every trial—
The pure of soul, though disasters stamp them,
were musk squeezed from their limbs, it would gush forth.
Distill musk, if you squeeze it from their edges.
بنيthe sons of شهابٍShihab بهاby it أعنيI mean وإنهُمand indeed they
لأكرمُsurely the noblest الناسِof people أخلاقاًin character ومُصطنَعاand in kindness shown
By this praise I mean the sons of Shihab; indeed they
It is the clan of Shahab I speak of, indeed they
are the noblest of people in character and kindness shown.
Are the most noble people in manners and deeds.
