I say to my soul, in solace and consolation:

In Malik there was indeed a successor to Mismaʿ.

O good Mismaʿ, whom shall we call when there falls

some calamity upon the peoples, and they fall into discord?

O Mismaʿ—alas for Iraq, with no leader of its own!

Through whom, we wonder, will the imperiled, guilt-stained man find safety?

Those eyes, there in the city, grief-stricken,

weep for you, since the shrouds and the eroded bank claimed you.

They laid you to rest—a right hand never before pillowed,

and an outpouring of bounty—when death carried you off.

You were the meteor with which the foe was struck,

and the sea from which bucketfuls of bounty are drawn.
