ولما رأيت سراةَ قومي

ولما رأيت سراةَ قومي

سكوناً لا يثوب لهم زعيم

سكوناً لا يثوب لهم زعيم

And when I saw the chiefs of my people

When I saw the dwellings of my people

motionless, with no leader returning to them,

In stillness, with no chief to lead them,

هتفت بمسمع وصدى أميرٍ

هتفت بمسمع وصدى أميرٍ

وقبرِ معمّرٍ تلك القروم

وقبرِ معمّرٍ تلك القروم

I called out to Mismaʿ and Amīr’s echo,

I called out loud, my voice echoing,

and to Muʿammar’s grave—those mighty chiefs.

To the tomb of the late commander, and those hills.
