أَحَمامَةَO dove البَيداthe desert أَطَلتِyou have prolonged بُكاكِyour weeping
فَبِحُسنِand by the beauty of صَوتُكِyour voice ماwhat الَّذيthat which أَبكاكِmade you weep
O dove of the desert, you have prolonged your weeping.
And by the beauty of your voice, what has made you weep?
إِنif كانَwas حَقاًtrue ماwhat ظَنَنتُI supposed فَإِنَّthen indeed بيwithin me
فَوقَmore than الَّذيthat which بِكِwithin you مِنof شَديدِintense جَواكِyour burning anguish
If what I have supposed is true, then I bear
more than the fierce anguish you bear.
إِنّيindeed I أَظُنُّكِI think you قَدindeed دُهيتِyou were stricken بِفُرقَةٍby separation
مِنfrom مُؤنِسٍa comforting companion لَكِfor you فَاِرتَمَضتِso you burned with grief لِذاكِbecause of that
Indeed, I think you have been stricken by separation
from one who kept you company, so you burned with grief over that.
لَكِنَّbut ماwhat أَشكوهُI lament it مِنof فَرطِexcess الجَوىburning anguish
بِخِلافِunlike ماwhat تَجِدينَyou feel مِنfrom شَكواكِyour lament
But the overwhelming anguish I lament
is unlike what you feel in your lament.
أَناI إِنَّماonly أَبكيI weep over الذُنوبَsins وَأَسرِهاand their bondage
وَمُنايَand my wish فيin الشَكوىlamenting مَنالُattainment of فَكاكيmy release
I weep only over sins and the bondage they impose,
and my wish in lamenting is to gain my release.
وَإِذاand when بَكَيتُI wept سَأَلتُI asked رَبيmy Lord رَحمَةًmercy
وَتَجاوزاًand pardon فَبُكايَso my weeping غَيرُdifferent from بُكاكِyour weeping
And when I weep, I ask my Lord for mercy
and pardon; so my weeping is unlike yours.
