وَلاand not يَشُدُّstrengthens سِواهُother than him أَزرَstrength سُلطانِa sultan
Among us, kingship was crowned only through Ibn Salman,
And none but he bolsters a sultan's strength.
ماnot الريحُthe wind فيin سَيرِهاits course تَحكيmatches عَزائِمَهُhis resolves

The wind in its course does not match his resolve—
Only noble steeds do, when they press hard against rivals.

Our island was once al-Andalus;
And since you grew up there, it is the two Iraqs.

أَسنَدتُI have leaned مِنكَfrom you إِلىupon رُكنٍa pillar كَثَهَلانِlike Thahlan
Why does the eye of calamities watch me, though
I have leaned on a pillar in you, like Thahlan?
وَكَيفَand how يَشكوcomplains of الصَدىthirst مِثليone like me عَلىdespite مِقَتيmy affection

وَماؤُكَand your water الغَمرُabundant يَرويquenches كُلَّevery ظَمآنِthirsty one
And how can one like me complain of thirst, despite my affection,
While your abundant water quenches every thirsty one?
أَمor كَيفَhow يَطمَحُaspires شَيطانٌa devil إِلىtoward أُفُقيmy horizon

وَمِنand from سَمائِكِyour sky يُرمىis pelted كُلُّevery شَيطانِdevil
Or how can a devil aspire to my horizon,
While every devil is pelted from your sky?

But how can the pupils of their eyes glance at me in scorn,
While you are my refuge from every human being?
