لَبَرَّزتُ في مَيدانِ كُلِّ بِطالَةٍ

لَبَرَّزتُ في مَيدانِ كُلِّ بِطالَةٍ

وَبَرَّزَ غَيري في التُقى أَيَّ تَبريزِ

وَبَرَّزَ غَيري في التُقى أَيَّ تَبريزِ

I have indeed excelled in the arena of every idle pursuit,

While others have excelled in piety—how greatly!

إِذا لَم يَكُن فَهمي إِلى الخَيرِ قائِدي

إِذا لَم يَكُن فَهمي إِلى الخَيرِ قائِدي

فَلا كانَ فَهمي لا وَلا كانَ تَميِيزي

فَلا كانَ فَهمي لا وَلا كانَ تَميِيزي

If my understanding is not my guide toward goodness,

Then may my understanding be no more—no, nor my discernment!

تَطَلَّبتُ إِخوانَ الصَفا فَوَجَدتُهُم

تَطَلَّبتُ إِخوانَ الصَفا فَوَجَدتُهُم

زُيوفاً كَأَعمالي وَمَن لي بِإِبريزِ

زُيوفاً كَأَعمالي وَمَن لي بِإِبريزِ

I sought sincere brethren, but found them

Counterfeit coins, like my deeds—and who will bring me pure gold?
