أَنَّ الغِنى عَنهُ غَيرُ مُنفَصِلِ
And many a wealthy man was deluded by his ambition
He whom ambition led to believe
Into thinking that wealth would never leave him.
That wealth would never leave his side

So he dragged the skirts of his conceit in wanton pride,
Strutted with pride and vanity,
And strutted in fine robes out of arrogance.
Decked out in fine robes and gowns.

فَاِعتاضَ بَعدَ الجَديدِ بِالسَمَلِ
The hands of calamity stripped him of his attire,
But life soon tore his clothes to rags,
So in place of new clothes he took threadbare rags.
And meager times replaced his wealth.

So do not trust in wealth, for its bane is
So trust not in your riches, whose nature
Poverty, and time's course has its reversals.
Is loss and fortune’s fickle wheel.

Let gaining your sustenance suffice,

Not hoarding up for days ahead.
