قَدindeed أَسمَعتَناyou made us hear غِناءًsinging لاno خَلاقَmerit بِهِin it
كَماas when تُعَرَّكُare rubbed آذانَthe ears of السَنانيرِcats
You have made us hear singing with no merit,
like the sound of cats having their ears rubbed.
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen إِرتَفَعَتshe rose فيin الصَوتِthe voice لاnot إِرتَفَعَتmay she rise
أَهدَتshe offered لِسَمعِيَto my hearing تَهديرَthe grunting of الخَنازيرِpigs
Then, when she raised her voice—may she never rise!—
she offered my ears the grunting of pigs.
وَكُلَّماand whenever اِنخَفَضَتshe sank lower فيهِin it مُزَمزَمَةًhumming
خِلتَyou imagined الزَنابيرَthe wasps تَشدوsing فيin القَواريرِthe bottles
And whenever she lowered her voice, humming,
you would think wasps were singing in bottles.
لاdo not تُخدَعَنَّbe deceived بِأَثوابٍby garments مُصَبَّغَةٍdyed
نَصَبنَهُنَّthey set them up شِباكاًas nets لِلمَدابيرِfor the hapless
Do not be deceived by dyed robes,
which they have set as nets for the hapless.
