ماذا يَسُرُّكَ مِن مالٍ تُجَمِّعُهُ

ماذا يَسُرُّكَ مِن مالٍ تُجَمِّعُهُ

أَو ما يُغُمُّكَ مِنهُ إِذ تُفَرِّقُهُ

أَو ما يُغُمُّكَ مِنهُ إِذ تُفَرِّقُهُ

What pleases you in wealth you amass,

What delights you of wealth you amass

or what grieves you about it when you distribute it?

Or what saddens you of it when you disperse it

وَلَم يَكُن لَكَ مالٌ يَومَ تَكسُبُهُ

وَلَم يَكُن لَكَ مالٌ يَومَ تَكسُبُهُ

لَكِنَّهُ لَكَ مالٌ يَومَ تُنفِقُهُ

لَكِنَّهُ لَكَ مالٌ يَومَ تُنفِقُهُ

And wealth is not yours on the day you earn it;

You had no wealth the day you earned it

but it is yours on the day you spend it.

But it was wealth for you the day you spent it

تُحِبُّ مِن أَجلِهِ الدُنيا وَتورِثُها

تُحِبُّ مِن أَجلِهِ الدُنيا وَتورِثُها

وَسَوفَ توبِقُكَ الدُنيا وَتوبِقُهُ

وَسَوفَ توبِقُكَ الدُنيا وَتوبِقُهُ

You love this world for its sake and bequeath it;

You love the life for it and inherit it

and this world will ruin you and ruin it.

Yet life will fail you and fail it

سَتَرتَهُ عَن عُيونِ الناسِ كُلِّهُمُ

سَتَرتَهُ عَن عُيونِ الناسِ كُلِّهُمُ

وَلَستَ تَعلَمُ أَنَّ الدَهرَ يَرمُقُهُ

وَلَستَ تَعلَمُ أَنَّ الدَهرَ يَرمُقُهُ

You hid it from the eyes of all people,

You concealed it from all people's eyes

yet you do not know that Time watches it.

Yet you know not that fate keeps an eye on it

إِن لَم تُبَكِّر إِلَيهِ في نَوائِبِهِ

إِن لَم تُبَكِّر إِلَيهِ في نَوائِبِهِ

فَسَوفَ يَطرُقُهُ رَكضاً فَيُرهِقُهُ

فَسَوفَ يَطرُقُهُ رَكضاً فَيُرهِقُهُ

If you do not hasten to it amid Time's calamities,

If you do not hasten to aid it in adversities

then Time will descend upon it at a gallop and overwhelm it.

It will urgently overtake and exhaust it
