الصَبرُpatience عَمَّنaway from the one whom تُحِبُّهُyou love him صَبَرُbitter aloe
وَنَفعُand the benefit مَنone who لامَreproached فيin الهَوىlove ضَرَرُharm
To endure separation from one you love—that is true endurance.
Enduring separation from the one you love is bitter aloe.
The benefit of one who reproaches in love is harm.
And the help of one who reproaches you for love is harm.
مَنwhoever كانَwas دونَshort of المَرامِthe goal مُصطَبِراًpatiently enduring
فَلَستُbut I am not دونَshort of المَرامِthe goal أَصطَبِرُendure patiently
Whoever patiently settles for less than the desired goal may do so;
Whoever may be patient short of his goal—
but I will not patiently settle for less than the desired goal.
But I am not patient short of mine.
مَنفَعَةُthe benefit الصَبرِof patience غَيرُnot عاجِلَةٍimmediate
وَرُبَّماand perhaps حالَintervened دونَهاin its way الغِيَرُchanges of fortune
The benefit of patience does not come at once,
The benefit of patience is not immediate,
and the turns of fortune may intervene before it arrives.
And changes of fortune may stand in its way.
فَقُمso rise بِناwith us نَلتَمِسlet us seek مَآرِبَناour desires

So rise and come with us; let us seek our aims,
So rise with us; let us seek our desires,
whether fate keeps us here or does not.
Whether fate stands by us or not.

For we possess spirits that raise us to mastery,
Indeed, we have souls that make us masters,
whether time assists them or leaves them unaided.
Whether time aids them or forsakes them.

Seek from life whatever brings you joy,
And seek from life what delights you,
whether people reproach you for it or excuse you.
Whether people reproach you for it or excuse you.
