لكن لِقلَّةِ حِيلتي أتصبَّرُ
They said, “You have endured”; yet I did not endure out of fortitude.
They said you were patient, but I was not patient to be tortured,
But with so little recourse, I force myself to endure.
Rather, I pretend patience out of lack of choice.

Do not warn me away from them, lest you arouse my desire for them.
Do not dissuade me from them, lest you make me eager for them,
For often the reproacher forbids, and thereby commands.
For sometimes prohibitions make one eager.

أنا عبدُ مَن أهوى ومملوكُ الهوى

ولو أنني سابورُ أو إسكندرُ
I am a slave to the one I love, and a bondsman of love,
I am a slave of those I love, a slave of passion,
Even if I were Shapur or Alexander.
Even if I were Sapoor or Alexander,

ومن العجائبِ عاشقٌ متكبِّرُ
Arrogance is no trait of a lover,
Arrogance does not suit the brother of passion.
And an arrogant lover is an oddity.
And it is strange for a lover to be arrogant.
